Olive Schreiner (1855 ù 1920) was a South African author, pacifist and political activist. The Story of an African Farm is her best-known book. She worked as a governess traveling from place to place. Schreiner was very active in social causes throughout her life. Dreams was published in 1890. Each of the eleven stories in this collection was based on one of the authorŽs dreams and represents her thoughts on life. This early work by Jerome K. Jerome was originally published in the early 20th century and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Dreams' is a short essay on dreams by this humorous author. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall, England in 1859. Both his parents died while he was in his early teens, and he was forced to quit school to support himself. In 1889, Jerome published his most successful and bestremembered work, 'Three Men in a Boat'. Featuring himself and two of his friends encountering humorous situations while floating down the Thames in a small boat, the book was an instant success, and has never been out of print. In fact, its popularity was such that the number of registered Thames boats went up fifty percent in the year following its publication.

Olive (Emilia Albertina) Schreiner, Mrs. Cronwright (also wrote as: Ralph Iron) (1855-1920) was a South African author, pacifist and political activist. In 1867 she moved to Cradock with her older brother. When her brother left Cradock, Olive chose to become a governess. She accepted posts as a governess at a number of farms, most notably the Fouchés who provided inspiration for certain aspects of The Story of an African Farm (1883), published under the pseudonym Ralph Iron, as well as a small collection of stories and allegories called Dream Life and Real Life: A Little African Story (1893). However, Olive's ambitions did not lie in writing. By 1880, she applied to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh to be trained as a nurse, but her ill-health prevented her from completing the training. She returned home in 1889, where she felt extremely alienated from the people around her. In an attempt to reconnect with her surroundings, she became increasingly involved in local politics and produced a series of articles published posthumously as Thoughts on South Africa (1923). Her other works include: Dreams (1891) and Woman and Labour (1911).
