Few historical figures can be more admired than Harriet Tubman. She is mythologised, idolised and made superhuman, and whilst the temptation is clear, she was really a human being, reflected in these pages. A slave, a woman, a runaway, black and poor, she fought all the odds to become a shining point in the history of emancipation. Not only was Harriet Tubman an abolitionist but she was active as an advocate for the deprived and spoke out in favour of women's suffrage. After a childhood full of violence and fear at the hands of her masters, the woman born as Araminta Ross escaped slavery. She had feared her brothers and sisters being sold away, never to be seen again, she had feared her children becoming slaves and she hoped for better. In the climate of the Southern states, decades before emancipation came for the slaves, Harriet Tubman showed unprecedented courage by not only remaining in the United States, against her best interest, but by journeying again and again into the slave states to rescue friends, family and even slaves on plantations who she had no relationship to at all. She worked as a cook, a nurse, a scout and a spy. She was even described as a general by her contemporaries in the Union army. Tubman was the very first woman to lead an armed military expedition but astounding as that is, her fight was always bigger than the war. She fought to make lives better for the downtrodden. Sarah Bradford, our author, hoped by the publication of Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman to give Harriet Tubman a modicum of comfort in her old age. Please note this is the LARGE PRINT EDITION: THE following little story was written by Mrs. Sarah H. Bradford, of Geneva, with the single object of furnishing some help to the subject of the memoir. Harriet Tubman's services and sufferings during the rebellion, which are acknowledged in the letters of Gen. Saxton, and others, it was thought by many, would justify the bestowment of a pension by the Government. But the difficulties in the way of procuring such relief, suggested other methods, and finally the present one. The narrative was prepared on the eve of the author's departure for Europe, where she still remains. It makes no claim whatever to literary merit. Her hope was merely that the considerably numerous public already in part acquainted with Harriet's story, would furnish purchasers enough to secure a little fund for the relief of this remarkable woman. Outside that circle she did not suppose the memoir was likely to meet with much if any sale. In furtherance of the same benevolent scheme, and in order to secure the whole avails of the work for Harriet's benefit, a subscription has been raised more than sufficient to defray the entire cost of publication. This has been effected by the generous exertions of Wm. G. Wise, Esq., of this city. The whole amount was contributed by citizens of Auburn, with the exception of two liberal subscriptions by Gerrit Smith, Esq., and Mr. Wendell Phillips. Mr. Wise has also consented, at Mrs. Bradford's request, to act as trustee for Harriet; and will receive, invest, and apply, for her benefit, whatever may accrue from the sale of this book. The spirited wood-cut likeness of Harriet, in her costume as scout, was furnished by the kindness of Mr. J. C. Darby, of this city.

Bradford (1818-1912) was an American writer and historian best remembered for her two pioneering biographical books on Harriet Tubman. Tubman (c.1822-1913) was a former slave, abolitionist and political activist in the women's suffrage movement who had served as a scout and spy for the US Army during the Civil War and helped many escaped slaves reach safety through the Underground Railroad network. In 1869 Bradford wrote this, the first of those two books, in order to raise funds for Tubman's support and through her use of extensive interviews with Tubman the two became friends. It was the first biography of Tubman of any depth and because Bradford was one of the first Caucasian authors to deal with African-American topics her work attracted worldwide attention, selling very well. In 1886 she followed up with 'Harriet Tubman, Moses of Her People', again to assist in supporting Tubman. Bradford's other published work consisted mainly of children's literature and she was one of the first American women to specialise in that field.
