In one of the finest houses of the rue Neuve-des-Mathurins, at halfpast eleven at night, two young women were sitting before the fireplaceof a boudoir hung with blue velvet of that tender shade, withshimmering reflections, which French industry has lately learned tofabricate. Over the doors and windows were draped soft folds of bluecashmere, the tint of the hangings, the work of one of those upholstererswho have just missed being artists. A silver lamp studded with turquoise,and suspended by chains of beautiful workmanship, hung from thecentre of the ceiling. The same system of decoration was followed in thesmallest details, and even to the ceiling of fluted blue silk, with longbands of white cashmere falling at equal distances on the hangings,where they were caught back by ropes of pearl. A warm Belgian carpet,thick as turf, of a gray ground with blue posies, covered the floor. Thefurniture, of carved ebony, after a fine model of the old school, gavesubstance and richness to the rather too decorative quality, as a paintermight call it, of the rest of the room. On either side of a large window,two etageres displayed a hundred precious trifles, flowers of mechanicalart brought into bloom by the fire of thought. On a chimney-piece ofslate-blue marble were figures in old Dresden, shepherds in bridal garb,with delicate bouquets in their hands, German fantasticalitiessurrounding a platinum clock, inlaid with arabesques. Above it sparkledthe brilliant facets of a Venice mirror framed in ebony, with figurescarved in relief, evidently obtained from some former royal residence.Two jardinieres were filled with the exotic product of a hot-house, pale,but divine flowers, the treasures of botany.

A Daughter of Eve is one of those stories in which people get themselves into terrible trouble, whose ripples spread until they seem to be stuck in some ghastly maelstrom of their own making. The Countess Marie de Vandenesse, out of boredom at being married to a good man, decides to take a lover, one Raoul Nathan. Thinking that his fortune is made, Nathan quickly finds himself in deep water until he is rescued by the efforts of the Countess, who in turn is rescued.This excellent novella from the 'private life' collection of Balzac's Comédie Humaine focusses on the elder daughter, Madame Felix de Vandenesse, who has no need to be dissatisfied with her husband, yet naively invites a scandal on herself when she is manoeuvred into an affair by more sophisticated and mischievous ladies.Her chosen lover, Raoul Nathan, is an ambitious playwright and would-be politician, a man of some genius but with feet of clay. Despite having a devoted mistress, the vaudeville actress Florine, Nathan recklessly courts Madame Felix, little knowing that he to is the dupe of wiser minds.Each of the principle players receive the forensic treatment in turn, with both their inner and outer physiognomies laid bare in swift, slashing strokes by the always busy pen of Balzac. His descriptions of rooms and their contents are just as detailed.

Owing to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature. He is renowned for his multi-faceted characters; even his lesser characters are complex, morally ambiguous and fully human. Inanimate objects are imbued with character as well; the city of Paris, a backdrop for much of his writing, takes on many human qualities.
