  • Alice's Adventures Underground

    Lewis Carroll (1832 - 1898)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
Alice’s Adventures Underground was the original version of Reverend Charles Dodgson’s (Lewis Carroll) Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It had been initially told to the three young Liddell girls – daughters of the Dean from Christ’s Church, Oxford, whom Carroll had befriended – on a trip down the river on July the 4th, 1864. The girls, and most especially Alice, who was portrayed as Carroll’s lead character in the story, loved the story so much that they had asked Carroll to write it down.Alice Liddell received the story’s finished manuscript, written in sepia ink and adorned with 37 delightful drawings made by the author himself, two years later as a Christmas gift. The manuscript was to be the main inspiration for the published version, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and was to remain in Alice Liddell’s possession until 1928.The story is quite similar to Lewis Carroll’s original Alice book that had gathered so much acclaim throughout the past two centuries. Alice’s Adventures Underground is simply a more familiar tale presented to the girls with references to family members and several other differences that were later removed from the Alice in Wonderland books. The story features Alice’s encounter with the White Rabbit, the caterpillar, the Red Queen and many of the other characters that have enchanted and inspired children’s imaginations throughout the generations. The Mad Hatter and March Hare are not featured, having only been added to the subsequent published version. The cheerful, beautifully designed story and the delightful drawings will captivate readers and draw them into Alice’s strange and fascinating world at least to the same extent as Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
