  • Through the Wheat

    Thomas Boyd

Paperback (Echo Library, Feb. 26, 2019)
Thomas Alexander Boyd (1898-1935) was an American journalist and novelist born in Defiance, Ohio where he was raised by his mother's family as his father had died before he was born. While still in school, he and a friend enlisted in the US Marine Corps and saw service in France where he was gassed in 1918. Upon discharge from the occupation forces in 1919 Boyd tried several occupations before becoming a writer for newspapers in Minneapolis and St Paul, Minnesota. He went on to open a bookstore, Kilmarnock Books, in St Paul which became the focus of literary figures including Sinclair Lewis. Urged to write himself, in 1923 he published his first novel Through the Wheat, based in part on his own wartime experiences. Contemporary reviews compared it to The Red Badge of Courage and F Scott Fitzgerald called it "a work of art," praising it in a review published in the New York Evening Post. Boyd later became interested in socialist causes during the Depression, eventually running as the Communist candidate for governor of Vermont. He died suddenly of a stroke in 1935.
  • Through The Wall

    Elisabeth Kyle

Hardcover (William Heinemann Ltd, Nov. 15, 1973)
According to the study guide for her 1968 book "Great Ambitions, A Story of the Early Years of Charles Dickens": Elisabeth Kyle was born Agnes Mary Robertson Dunlop in Ayr, Scotland, to James and Elizabeth Riddle Dunlop. Her father often paraphrased the classics for his daughter while suppressing those books that he felt were either poorly written or undesirable for children. Although he died when she was only nine, Kyle's father undoubtedly influenced her later life. Kyle revealed that she often told stories just to pass the time, but as a child had no real desire to become a writer.
  • Through the Wall

    Rebecca Purton

    (, April 23, 2014)
"Through the Wall" is a short story for children (and grown-ups, by all means, if they are partial to a funny little tale). It's the story of Holly and her neighbour, Mrs Cooper, who has an unusual book, and forms part of the "Tales from the Moonlit Road" series. Exciting note! The stories in Volume Two of "Tales from the Moonlit Road" have a new feature called "Words from the story," which can be found at the end of each tale.

  • Through the Wheat

Thomas Boyd, Mike Vendetti, Spoken Realms

    details
Throughout history generations of young men have fought in wars started by old men. There is no experience other than combat that makes a more lasting or life changing impression on a man or woman. The majority who have seen the battlefield saw combat before their 25th birthday, and many who did never got to celebrate that anniversary. Those who do come back are forever changed. Krebs in Hemmingway's "Soldier's Home" for instance. Novels of war are best written by those who served. Boyd saw combat in WWI and although the face of war has changed in many ways since this novel was written, the bottom line hasn't. Dead is dead, fear is fear. As a Vietnam veteran my stomach was often in knots reading Boyd's vivid descriptions of a "Grunt's" view of his battles fought in WWI. I was also reminded of the fine line between going home alive or dead. Another foot to the right, and the mine would have gone off under me.
  • Through the Wheat

    Thomas Boyd

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Nov. 26, 2017)
Excerpt from Through the WheatUsk, like soft blue smoke, fell with the dying spring air and settled upon the northern French village. In the uncertain light one and two story buildings set along the crooked street showed crisply, bearing a resem blance to false teeth in an ash-old face. To young Hicks, disconsolate as he leaned against the outer wall of the French canteen, upon whose smooth white surface his body made an unseemly blot, life was worth very little.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
