  • Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, the astronomer poet of Persia

    Omar Khayyam, Edward FitzGerald

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, May 7, 2015)
About the Book Poetry as an art form predates written text, with the earliest poetry having been recited or sung, and employed as a way of remembering oral history. The oldest examples of epic poetry include the Epic of Gilgamesh from Bablylon and the Greek epics The Iliad and The Odyssey, and the Indian Sanskrit epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The longest epic poems in history were the Mahabharata and the Tibetan Epic of King Gesar. Aristotle's Poetics considered that there were three genres of poetry—the epic, the comic, and the tragic. Later aestheticians identified: epic poetry, lyric poetry, and dramatic poetry. One of the most popular form since the Late Middle Ages, is the sonnet, which by the 13th century had become standardized as fourteen lines following a set rhyme scheme. The form had crystallized further by the 14th century and the Italian Renaissance, under the guidance of Petrarch. Also in this Book American poetry arose first as efforts by colonists to add their voices to English poetry in the 17th century, well before the unification of the 13 colonies as a result of thye American War of Independence. Most of the colonists' early poetry relied on British models. During the 19th century, a distinctive American voice began to emerge when, in the later part of that century Walt Whitman began to be recognized internationally. And in this Book English poetry begins with Anglo-Saxon poetry such as the hymn on the creation, which Bede attributes to Cædmon (658–680AD). William Shakespeare was the stand out poet of the Elizabethan period, while Milton was considered the greatest poet of Jacobean and Caroline pe5riod (1603-1670). The Romantic movement was very big, proiducing such greats as William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Keats. The major Victorian poets were John Clare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Matthew Arnold and Gerard Manley Hopkins. James Macpherson was the first Scottish poet to gain an international reputation, while Robert Burns is regarded as the national poet of Scotland. The most important figure of Scottish Romanticism, Walter Scott, began as a poet. In Wales the works of the great hymn writers of the 18th and 19th centuries were the poets William Williams Pantycelyn and Ann Griffiths. In the early 20th century there was a Welsh renaissance, with poets like T. H. Parry-Williams and D. Gwenallt Jones and T. Gwynn Jones.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades.
