It takes the events of one turbulent year--the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black--to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride, for no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away.

Those 200 acres of Mississippi cotton land, bought by her Grandfather in 1887, were more precious than gold, and as gragile as freedom. But it is 1933 now, and times are hard. To pay off the yearly land taxes, Cassie's father has gone north to work on the railroad, while at home Cassie's Mama teaches school and tends to the farm. Casie and her brothers make do with patches and hand-me-downs, but they take comfort in the thought that come what may, they will always have the land. That year, 1933, will be one Cassie wil never forget.
