(CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 25, 2013)
Sixteen-year-old Tyler’s big dream of becoming a top immunologist could come crashing down if he doesn’t manage all of the little things right now. But when this obsessive-compulsive science geek confronts a school election, a demeaning job, needy tutees, a first girlfriend, and the possible extinction of honeybees, there are suddenly too many things to manage. Tyler’s catastrophically humorous run for high school student council convinces the principal that he’s a troublemaker, while it wins him the admiration and desire of Rachel, a smart and iconoclastic reporter for the school paper. A new night job at a nursing home puts Tyler on a collision course with his new foster parents, a childless middle-aged couple with an agenda and a tragic past of their own. And the pain of his mother’s death becomes too big to ignore. Set on the mean streets of suburban Las Vegas, The Genius of Little Things is about how you can’t always get what you want. But sometimes, well, you know... The Genius of Little Things is journalist and screenwriter Larry Buhl’s first novel.

  • Kidd,The Little King

    Bea Hsieh, Zihyan Huang

Paperback (Independently published, May 9, 2017)
In a land far away established a country of chickens. There lived a filial and kind little cock, Kidd. When he was ten, Kidd rescued an old fox, who cast a spell on him and prevented him from growing up ever since then. The little cock was discriminated against his look and no one wanted to be his friend, except the animals in the forest. One day, Kidd’s father was bitten by a poisonous snake while working in the woods. Only the best medicine owned by the King could cure him, but how could they get it from the King? It was just around the time when the King planned to retire. A royal announcement was made to the public that whoever passed the King’s four tests could become the new king. But if one failed, all of his feathers would be plucked as a punishment. Lots of roosters tried, but no one succeeded. In order to get the best medicine from the King for his father, Kidd decided to take up the challenge despite the risk of injuries or death. The King’s tests were tough and even dangerous, but Kidd never gave up. With love, courage, faith and friendship, Kidd saved his father and became the new king in the end. The main characters of well-known fairy tales are mostly handsome princes or beautiful princesses. Influenced by common values, people tend to pursue the beautiful and shun the ugly. In the real life, children who look different from regular people are often discriminated against or marginalized. The story “Kidd, the Little King” is about love, faith, courage and friendship. Through the little, imperfect character, Kidd, we hope that children can learn to respect and appreciate the differences of others. And in the process of character development, children can learn the lesson that even life is imperfect, but they can still face challenges bravely and overcome the difficulties that are thrown their ways.
