  • The King's Dragon

    Scott Chantler

Hardcover (Kids Can Press, April 1, 2014)
In this fourth installment of the Three Thieves fantasy adventure series of graphic novels, Captain Drake's quest to find Dessa, Topper and Fisk has led him to a remote healing monastery where he believes they have gone to tend Dessa's broken leg. While pursuing his quarry, Captain Drake finds himself beset by memories of his early days as a young and idealistic knight in King Roderick's service. Featured as flashbacks, these memories provide readers with important clues to the unfolding story, such as that the King's Dragons were more loyal to the palace chamberlain, Maarten Greyfalcon, than to the king; that there was a mysterious letter written by the king, meant to be read only at his death, which had disappeared; and that Drake had uncovered a plot to murder the king. The tale moves forward in both the present and the past, with the flashbacks drawn in black-and-white to differentiate the time. As with the very successful and well-reviewed first three titles by award-winning cartoonist Scott Chantler, high action propels this fast-moving story forward, with sword fighting, chase scenes and a bold and daring narrow escape, while intricate plotlines full of intrigue and suspense (and occasional witty banter) keep the reader guessing. The art is dramatic and evocative, offering emotional close-ups, telling details and believable backdrops. This is a wonderful graphic novel that will engage reluctant readers, providing a painless way to dive into literature and learn about plot, character, setting and other literary devices.

Fully illustrated version for Kindle devices!! Go to TheDragonKing.com for paperback copy. This is no ordinary fairy tale!Yes, it takes place in a medieval kingdom. There is a boy who happens to be a king and a dragon who is terrorizing the countryside. Knights are sent to slay said dragon--most don't come back."What foolish creature would dare venture so close to the cave of a dragon?" The low menacing growl reverberated from deep inside the darkened entrance. Each word vibrated in Ethan's chest and shook the mountainside. And yes, it is a story about magic--and dragon fire, a razor sharp horn, a battle in the sky, green scales and dragon tears. However, if you, Dear Reader, are lucky enough to read this epic, you will learn quite a bit more--how our hero, King Ethan, is forced to make a decision between his own safety and the welfare of his kingdom, how he must master his fear and with only his cunning and sheer will, make what is impossible--possible, because he has no other choice."Ethan, get a hold of yourself!! As if from a dream, Ethan awoke, shaken miraculously from his paralysis. It was time to act! There was no other way! No other choice! "Don't think...just do it! You've got to do it! Now!"But in an uncanny turn of events both Ethan and the dragon find themselves at the mercy of the other and if either is to survive they must dare to do the unimaginable--they must trust one another. And, through a new found mutual respect and compassion, both may be given a second chance and Ethan miraculously transformed by old dragon magic. This children's story was inspired by a chance meeting on a pediatric burn unit with a boy named Ethan, who had been severely burned in a bonfire. I remembered the children's books that I myself had read as a child--the fairy tales, the fable, the adventure book, the myths. I thought about the hero's journey and how the hero is forever changed by that journey. My hope was to create a story which would instill in Ethan the courage to overcome any adversity; that he might "fight the fire" and win... "And the words of the dragon echoed in Ethan's ears, "No task lies before you so dreadful that you shall not master it." This fairy tale for children is also a musical. It is available as an audio book (The Dragon King, Various Artists) with narration, characters' voices, sound effects and six fully orchestrated, Broadway inspired songs. Lyrics to all 6 songs in the children's audio book are listed in the back pages of the eBook. Please check out YouTube, thedragonkingseries. There are interviews with both the author/composer, Vivian Slade, and the illustrator, Johanna Adrian Burr plus 17 audio clips with text and illustrations.Ethan asks himself, "How would I behave if I wasn't afraid?"I believe wholeheartedly that the most important lesson a child can learn is that they are their own hero; that there is nothing that they cannot do, be, have, or overcome. As parents, teachers and citizens, we have the opportunity to help guide them in this amazing discovery. So, in addition to The Dragon King eBook for kids and audio book, there is a companion Values Education curriculum available for grades K-6."Ethan, my son, what makes a just and honorable person?"In this Education guide you'll find art activities, games and discussion questions that correspond with thirteen character traits exemplified in The Dragon King. For more information about The Dragon King Character Development visit thedragonking.com.I am so grateful for those children's stories that inspired me to dream.
