The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858) is a collection of essays written by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. The essays take the form of a chiefly one-sided dialogue between the unnamed Author and the other residents of a New England boarding house who are known only by their profession, location at the table or other defining characteristics. The topics discussed range from an essay on the unexpected benefits of old age to the finest place to site a dwelling and comments on the nature of conversation itself. The tone of the book is distinctly Yankee and takes a seriocomic approach to the subject matter.

The interruption referred to in the first sentence of the first of these papers was just a quarter of a century in duration. Two articles entitled “The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table” will be found in the “New England Magazine,” formerly published in Boston by J. T. and E. Buckingham. The date of the first of these articles is November 1831, and that of the second February 1832. When “The Atlantic Monthly” was begun, twenty-five years afterwards, and the author was asked to write for it, the recollection of these crude products of his uncombed literary boyhood suggested the thought that it would be a curious experiment to shake the same bough again, and see if the ripe fruit were better or worse than the early windfalls.

Excerpt from The "Breakfast-Table" Series: The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table; The Professor at the Breakfast-Table; The Poet at the Breakfast-TableDr. Oliver wendell holmes is essentially what is termed a furlny fellow. He is one of the funniest fellows to be found, perhaps, in his native town of Boston and his native state of Massachusetts, which is saying a good deal; for in that grim, starched, intolerant, Puritanical country called New England a. Good deal more fun than you are aware of may be found, by those who seek for it, slyly lurking. A well-to-do, well-reputed, easy-going physician, Dr. Holmes has been for a long time, I take it, exempt from the cares of an actually bread-winning literary life, and can know but little of that eternal want of pence which vexes public men.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
