  • Sir Mortimer: A Novel

    Mary Johnston

Paperback (Cortero Publishing, Sept. 13, 2009)
Another of Mary Johnston's dazzling novels of fighting, romance, and adventure-this time on the Spanish Main! Sir Mortimer Ferne is a privateer-a legalized pirate-licensed by Queen Elizabeth I to prey on enemy ships. All is going well until Sir Mortimer becomes the victim of an ingenious, but malicious, trick in which he is made out to be a traitor. As a result, he loses everything-his status in court, his friends, his fortune, and worst of all, his honor. This launches him on a quest to gain it all back; but there are forces that do not want him to succeed in that task. In the process of Sir Mortimer's struggle, we become witnesses to Sir Francis Drake's capture of Cartagena, and Robert Dudley's expedition to Flushing, both in 1585. It is a story of English sea-dogs on the Spanish Main; but it is done with Mary Johnston's incredible eye for historical detail, and her gift for telling a rollicking good tale. Sir Mortimer was Johnston's third book to "go gold." It was the fifth bestselling book of 1905, following the previous successes of Audrey (No. 5 in 1902) and To Have and to Hold (No. 1 in 1900).

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, Dec. 28, 2016)
About the Book In historical fiction the plot is set in the past, and pays attention to the manners, social conditions and other details of the period portrayed. Some authors choose to include famous historical figures in their fictional plots, so that audiences can imagine how those individuals might have responded to the plots and environments established by the author. The Western literary component of this genre is founded in the early 19th century works of such authors as Sir Walter Scott, Honoré de Balzac, James Fenimore Cooper, and Leo Tolstoy. Also in this Book The romance novel, which is sometimes termed the romantic novel, places its primary focus on the development of a romantic relationship and love between two people. The sub-genres of the romance novel include: fantasy, historical romance, paranormal fiction, and science fiction. Romance novels existed in ancient Greece, and were also to be found in the literary fiction of the 18th and 19th centuries in the works of such authors as Samuel Richardson and Jane Austen. Also in this Book Titles covering drama and theater in the United States describe that part of the European theatrical tradition, dating back to ancient Greek theater, that is heavily influenced by British theatre. US drama has been heavily focussed on New York City at Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway. • Sir Mortimer

    Mary Johnston

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 25, 2018)
The tavern of the Triple Tun rang with acclamation, and, the windows being set wide because of the warmth of the June afternoon, the noise rushed into the street and waylaid the ears of them who went busily to and fro, and of them who lounged in the doorway, or with folded arms played Atlas to the tavern walls. "Who be the roisterers within?" demanded a passing citizen of one of these supporters. The latter made no answer; he was a ragged retainer of Melpomene, and he awaited the coming forth of Sir Mortimer Ferne, a notable encourager of all who would scale Parnassus. But his neighbor, a boy in blue and silver, squatted upon a sunny bench, vouchsafed enlightenment.
