Salammbô I FEAST It was at Megara, a suburb of Carthage, in the gardens of Hamilcar. The soldiers he had commanded in Sicily were giving themselves a big feast to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Eryx, and as the master was absent and they were numerous, they ate and drank in complete freedom. The captains, wearing bronze buskins, had placed themselves in the middle path, under a veil of purple with gold fringes, which extended from the wall of the stables to the first terrace of the palace; the common soldiers were scattered under the trees, where one distinguished a number of buildings with flat roofs, presses, cellars, shops, bakeries and arsenals, with a yard for elephants, pits for ferocious beasts, a prison for slaves. Fig trees surrounded the kitchens; a sycamore wood extended to masses of greenery, where grenades shone among the white tufts of cotton trees; vineyards, charged with bunches, mounted in the branches of the pines; a field roses blossomed under plane trees; from place to place on lawns swayed lilies; black sand, mixed with gunpowder coral, strewed the paths; and, in the middle, the cypress avenue from one end to the other like a double colonnade of obelisks green.

    (, June 16, 2020)
Salammbô" is an historical novel by Gustave Flaubert, published in 1862. Although the titular heroine is a fictional character, the novel’s setting of ancient Carthage and many characters are historically accurate, if highly romanticized. The novel is set in ancient Carthage just after the end of the first Punic War. Carthage has been defeated by the Romans and is nearly bankrupt. Being broke is always a problem, but it is made worse in Carthage’s case because they owe a huge amount in back pay to the mercenaries that they had been using to fight Rome. These battle hardened troops were camped outside the city..."Salammbô" is the story of the siege of Carthage in 240–237 BCE by mercenaries who had not been paid for their help in fighting the Romans. It is also the story of the love of Mathô, one of the mercenaries, for Salammbô, the daughter of Hamilcar, chief magistrate of Carthage.

    (, April 19, 2020)
Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880), French novelist and short story writer, was considered to be a master of style, obsessively devoted to finding the right word ("le mot juste"), in every piece of literature he produced. As a child he expressed great imagination and took in all the stories he could from his nurse and neighbors, and in doing so, he prepared himself for a life consumed by literature and history. In addition to his "Madame Bovary", his first published novel and the one considered to be his masterpiece, Flaubert is remembered for his great historical romance, "Salammbô". This novel draws largely from Book I of Polybius' "Histories", and combines the history of the First Punic War and the mythology of ancient Carthage in a fashion that has never been equaled. Flaubert sealed his reputation with the publication of this sophisticated novel in 1862, as audiences were entranced with its lush and brilliantly detailed descriptions of a little-known, but fascinating, period of history.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 17, 2017)
An historical novel that interweaves historical and fictional characters. The action takes place immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt against Carthage in the third century BC. This book, which Flaubert researched painstakingly, is largely an exercise in sensuous and violent exoticism. The Carthaginian costumes described therein even left traces on the fashions of the time. Nevertheless, in spite of its classic status in France, it is practically unknown today among English-speakers.

Paperback (Dodo Press, March 7, 2008)
Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was a French writer who is counted among the greatest Western novelists. He is known especially for his first published novel, Madame Bovary (1857), and for his scrupulous devotion to his art and style, best exemplified by his endless search for "le mot juste" ("the precise word"). In September 1849, he completed the first version of a novel, The Temptation of Saint Anthony. In 1858, he travelled to Carthage to gather material for his next novel, Salammbo (1862). It is now commonly admitted that he was one of the greatest writers who ever lived in France and his greatness principally depends upon the extraordinary vigour and exactitude of his style. His private letters show that he was not one of those to whom easy and correct language came naturally; he gained his extraordinary perfection with the unceasing sweat of his brow. Many critics consider Flaubert's best works to be models of style. His other works include Over Strand and Field: A Record of Travel Through Brittany (1904), Herodias (1877) and A Simple Soul (1877).
