I didn’t know whether I should cling to him tighter, or run for the hills. I mean, he certainly didn’t seem to have an addiction, so he wasn’t still using, but how could I be sure it wasn’t a major problem? I couldn’t date a guy like that, right? Besides, weren’t people who did drugs supposed to be completely strung out, messed up, or loser-ish? I mean, Cole wasn’t any of those things. All I really knew about drugs and alcohol I’d learned in health class: like how you’d forget your inhibitions and make bad choices, or how you’d go way past your limit and OD, or how you’d lose your friends and family, or your home, all because you’d become an addict. What I didn’t know was whether or not those consequences were absolute. Did they have to happen, or could you control it? I mean, could you do drugs, or drink alcohol, without becoming an addict? What exactly was I dealing with here?I didn’t understand why he was confessing this to me, but as I continued to hold his hand, I knew he needed me. Even though I was afraid of what he might say next, and I couldn’t help thinking that the less I knew the better, I decided that ignorance wasn’t always bliss. If he needed someone to help him through this, I would be there. “I’m not proud of it,” he said, still reluctant to look me in the eye, “and I haven’t touched anything since then, but…” He swallowed hard, trying to push the lump in his throat back down, “…but, I just thought you should know.”Finally, he looked up, meeting my gaze, as his eyes pleaded with me. He seemed to be asking me for forgiveness, and although the only real person who could give him what he wanted no longer existed, I knew I had to pardon him for his mistakes by not holding it against him now. “Thank you,” I whispered softly, “for trusting me enough to tell me about this.” I reached across the center console and cupped the curve of his face, feeling the soft stubble that gently tickled my palm. “I think I want to kiss you,” I confessed shyly, without looking away. ***Ava Young is an innocent, yet somewhat naive, teenager. Her family, friends, and grades take priority over just about everything - including boys. Even her best friend’s popular and good-looking twin brother can’t get her attention. But, when Cole Addison moves to Voorhees High School, Ava can’t think about anything else. Cole is smart and handsome, not to mention an all-star football player. Normally, those qualities would turn her off, but Cole is different than the conceded, superficial guys she's known her whole life. At first, Ava thinks he is flawless. That is, until she discovers his darkest secret and the real reason he left his hometown. The more Ava gets to know him, the more she learns that Cole is not the kind of guy she thinks he is. In fact, he is the exact opposite. He is the troubled boy who desperately wants to escape his past, and he is the bad boy most girls are supposed to avoid. But Ava is not most girls. Besides, by the time she realizes who Cole really is, it’s too late.
