She liked metal buttons, because they would wear longer than covered ones, but he liked them because they were more beautiful. “Besides,” said he, “I can see my face in them, grandmother.” Little Caleb then went to the window, so as to see his face plainer. He stood with his back to the window, and held the button so that the light from the window could shine directly upon it.

Arthur, and his wise and loyal dog Cabal, receive an urgent summons to go on a dangerous rescue mission. They must go to a mysterious realm, a realm set apart from the mortal realm, that is known in fable and song as The Summer Country It is a strange place, a beautiful place, and most of all a terrifyingly dangerous place. In their journey and adventures, they are aided by the Wild Herdsman and by the Ladies of Avalon. Cabal, experiencing adventures of his own, encounters a witch named Scatha, an audacious cat named Crazy Grayzie, and a brave and intelligent faerie dog who becomes Cabal 's special friend.

Arthur and Cabal must go to the Summer Country -- the Land of Faerie -- where they are needed to perform a dangerous rescue. As they are confronted by several extremely dangerous, fearsome foes, they also receive unexpected help from the Wild Herdsman, the Ladies of Avalon, a witch named Scatha, and an audacious little cat. The greatest help of all comes from a brave, intelligent faerie dog, a dog who becomes Cabal's special friend. Although Merlin has departed from the mortal realm, his spirit hovers over the entire adventure.
