  • Getting a Grip

    Kathleen Hopkins

Paperback (Indo American Books, May 24, 2016)
About the Book I am extremely grateful to my colleagues at NILD who have encouraged me over the past ten years to ``Please write this book!`` It has gone through many iterations involving piles of data, multiple school visits and interviews with many whom you will find in the text. In short, it has taken on a life of its own and I have needed to exercise the patience to wait for it. (Not one of my strong suits!) Special thanks go to Susannah Dailey, my daughter and special education teacher par excellence from whom many of these ideas have flowed. She lives the humor and pathos daily as she extends grace to struggling learners. I am indebted to Tamara Thornton, Yale University Press, whose thorough research of ``Handwriting in America`` has provided historical documentation for some of the reasons surrounding the current handwriting dilemma in America today. Truly, there is both humor and pathos as we watch the profound changes taking place in literacy. Thank you, Tamara, for your fine contribution. I received several refusals by publishers who found the book to be a ``niche`` market, not mainstream, nor relevant for learners today. How sad, America! Then along came a publisher from India, who loved it and now its message will be shared worldwide. God moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. Special thanks also to my husband, Ralph, whose patience greatly exceeds mine! Foreword Acknowledgements Introduction Chapter-1 I Can?t Read German! • Getting There

    Marla Stewart Konrad

Hardcover (Tundra Books, March 10, 2009)
A picture book collaboration with World Vision that celebrates life the world over! From the moment we take our first steps, it seems we are always on the move. Pictured here are the many and unusual ways we get around. Whether they go on their own two feet, by wheeled vehicle, water craft, animal power, or by air, children find some unorthodox and truly imaginative ways to “get there.”This delightful series is the result of the collaboration between Tundra Books and World Vision Canada to bring an array of exceptional photos from around the world to very young children. Each book centers on a universal theme, familiar by its very nature, yet new due to faraway settings and ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity. Each remarkable photo essay will foster discussion, observation, and many smiles as children compare and contrast their own experience to that of others. Watch for further books in this series.

  • Getting There

    William Robertson

    eBook (, March 18, 2013)
Jimmy Outten is a 13-year-old farm boy who has never left home before. But it is just after the Civil War and the house and barn have burned to the ground. The stock is gone. Confederate and Union soldiers marching across the land have taken every scrap of food. His mother has died from a war-borne fever. When his father limps home, a medical discharge in his pocket, they decide to head west. Uncle Charlie has a ranch just outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the future seems to beckon. It might have happened that way, but his father is killed after little more than a week on the trail and Jimmy is left to decide whether to go on or go back. Back to what? With 13-year-old bravado and little else, Jimmy decides to continue his journey – alone. With a little help and a lot of determination, he fights the terrain, the weather and his own youthful doubts. Toughened and matured by the trip, 15-year old Jim completes his odyssey in a little over a year, and arrives in Santa Fe a man.Getting There is the first volume of several novels currently in development. In prior years I wrote advertising copy for Westinghouse and IBM, then spent 35 years teaching college level English language and literature. The world of advertising was exciting and fun. The teaching was rewarding and deeply satisfying. Writing is all that and more.
