    Ben Hecht

Hardcover (DB Publishing House, Jan. 5, 2012)
She was crying on the couch. All right. Let her. But she was crying because she wanted something.... His hands grabbed her head and straightened her face until their eyes were looking into each other. "Listen," he said. He was shaking her. "I'm going away." Eyes watched each other. She looked until the face she had once kissed became entirely strange. There was no Lief, no lover. But a face staring murderously into hers. But there was something else. Tears behind the stare. Why was he weeping? The question like a tiny visitor sat down in her mind. He let her go and walked from the room, grabbing his hat and coat into his hands as he went. Doris listened. Down the stairs. Outside. He was gone. She went to the window. Her eye had swelled and her cheek pained. She sat down and looked into the street. "He hit me," she was whispering to herself. She began to weep with shame. But her tears seemed to soften her heart toward him. He had cried too.

    Ben HECHT (1894 - 1964)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2017)
Gargoyles goes deep into the souls of the persons and their relations with the upper classes, uncovering the dull sides and the emotional sides. Many times, the personalities, principles and morals of his personages are transformed, as they take an eye within themselves and appreciate what they treasured the most, how their selfdom invade their will and morals, and oftentimes do not grasp the purposes of those principles that are so critical to them. We take in the emanation of these alterations and focus on the life experiences of George Basine, his friends, and his family and the greatest of all, the pretentions that each of them have. Ben Hecht was an American screenwriter, director, producer, dramatist, journalist and author. He was a journalist in his younger days, he wrote about 35 books and a few of the highly enchanting screenplays and dramas in the United States. He gained screen credits, in his own self or in collaboration, for the plays or screenplays of about 70 films. The Dictionary of Literary Biography – American Screenwriters refers him as “one of the most successful screenwriters in the history of motion pictures. ”He got the first Academy Award for Original Screenplay, for Underworld in 1927. A number of his screenplays are regarded today as classics. Film historian Richard Corliss described him as "the Hollywood screenwriter”, a person who "personified Hollywood itself”. He wrote, produced and directed, Angels Over Broadway, and was nominated for Best Screenplay. A total of his six film screenplays were nominated for Academy Awards, with two winnings. He was an active Zionist before the widespread destruction started in Germany. He wrote essays and plays about the predicament of the European Jews, like, We Will Never Die in 1943 and A Flag is Born in 1946. Among his 70 to 90 screenplays, he wrote several unnamed authorships to avert the British boycott of his work between 1940s and 1950s.
