  • Fairy Tales from Brazil

    Elsie Spicer EELLS (1880 - 1963)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, March 15, 2017)
Fairy Tales from Brazil, with its subtitle, How and Why Tales from Brazilian Folk-Lore, is a volume of short fiction, many of those are originating myths and legends from Brazilian Indian Folklore. Appreciation are to those who published the Little Folks, Kindergarten-Primary Magazine, Everyland, Mayflower and Story Tellers' Magazine for the honor of republication of the stories which they have released. It was late in the afternoon in Elsie's Brazilian garden of flowers. The glinting blue of sea and sky which signifies a hot day has become passive and there are magenta hues starting to get ready for the splendor of the sunset. A lazy lizard crawls up the white wall. The praise of the sabiá, that amazing Brazilian bird, made soothing music from the kingly palm tree. The wind is strong with the scent of the orange bloom. This is how the story writer describes her day in her wonderful garden, reminiscing those times while writing her spectacular fairy tales. The stories include: I. How Night Came; II. How The Rabbit Lost His Tail; III. How The Toad Got His Bruises; IV. How The Tiger Got His Stripes; V. Why The Lamb Is Meek; VI. Why The Tiger And The Stag Fear Each Other; VII. How The Speckled Hen Got Her Speckles; VIII. How The Monkey Became A Trickster; IX. How The Monkey And The Goat Earned Their Reputations; X. How The Monkey Got A Drink When He Was Thirsty; XI. How The Monkey Got Food When He Was Hungry; XII. Why The Bananas Belong To The Monkey; XIII. How The Monkey Escaped Being Eaten; XIV. Why The Monkey Still Has A Tail; XV. How Black Became White; XVI. How The Pigeon Became A Tame Bird; XVII. Why The Sea Moans; and lastly, XVIII. How The Brazilian Beetles Got Their Gorgeous Coats.

  • Fairy Tales from Spain

    J. Munoz Escomez

eBook (Library of Alexandria, March 15, 2017)
Once upon a time there was a boy named Rupert, the sharpest and most prudent lad in his village, and indeed in any of those to be found for twenty leagues around. One night he was with a group of boys of his own age, who, gathered round the fire, were listening with amazement to a veteran soldier, covered with scars, which had gained him the modest stripes of a sergeant pensioner, and who was telling the story of his adventures. The narrator was at the most interesting point of his tale. "The great City of Fortune," he said, "is situated on the summit of a very high mountain, so steep that only very few have succeeded in reaching the top. There gold circulates in such abundance that the inhabitants do not know what to do with the precious metal. Houses are built of it, the walls of the fortress are of solid silver, and the cannons which defend it are enormous pierced diamonds. The streets are paved with duros, always new, because as soon as they begin to lose their brilliance they are replaced by others just minted. "You ought to see the cleanliness of it! What dirt there is is pure gold dust, which the dust carts collect in order to throw in large baskets into the drains. "The pebbles against which we stumble continually are brilliants as large as nuts, despised on account of the extraordinary abundance with which the soil supplies them. In a word, he who lives there may consider the most powerful of the earth as beggars. "The worst of it is that the path which leads there is rough and difficult, and most people succumb without having been able to arrive at the city of gold."
