Gr. 3^-5. After a dry introduction to gray wolves, Weide and Tucker render an extremely chatty accounting of the labor required to raise Koani from a wolf cub to an adult wolf capable of visiting an elementary school classroom. In the process, they weave together nitty-gritty details of wolf-raising, the history of the beasts' systematic destruction, facts about the animals' physical needs and behavior, and plenty of warnings that wolves are not pets. The color photographs vary in quality, but they add both appeal and information. An appendix containing commonly asked questions helps make the book useful for reports, though it's clear, as a closing plea for funds indicates, that the text's main intention is to advocate the restoration of wolves in the wilderness.
