  • The Wouldbegoods

    E. Nesbit

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 8, 2016)
Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/U80LCr --------- Summary: The Wouldbegoods follows the same six children from “The treasure Seekers”, plus an additional two neighbor children (Denny and Daisy) who have been banished from their mansion after a disaster involving a water hose and expensive stuffed animals. Dora urges the children to mend their ways and form "The Society of the Wouldbegoods." In this group, they look to perform good deeds, but there are two problems with their plans - They never go the way they are intended, and they do these good deeds for praise and glory and not because they are the right thing to do. Will they eventually realize that good deeds are their own reward, or will they just keep leaving a path of destruction wherever they go? E. Nesbit writes with a timeless quality and presents the world as it is, which was a bold innovation for children's literature. CHARACTERS The six Bastables: - Oswald, the narrator and the second oldest. In the first book he writes it both in third and first person and we are supposed to not know who it is. He reveals at the end that it was him all along. In this book he continues the disguise which annoyed me a bit - hello, you already told us who it was? - Dora, the oldest who was told by her mother when she died to look after the little ones. This means she is often a bit prissy and goody-goody so she is right at the head of the Wouldbegood Society - Dicky, - Noel, a poet - Alice, the only other girl. She is very DIY and won't let the boys leave her behind. - H.O., the youngest. The two children of the "robber" (see the Treasure Seekers) whom the Bastables call "white mice". The girl lives up to the name - at the start of the books she faints because of the Bastable's antics which begins the whole thing - but the boy is a lot more like the Bastables. • The Story of the Treasure Seekers

    E. Nesbit

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 7, 2016)
Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/U80LCr --------- The Story of the Treasure Seekers is a novel by E. Nesbit. First published in 1899, it tells the story of Dora, Oswald, Dicky, Alice, Noel, and Horace Octavius (H. O.) Bastable, and their attempts to assist their widowed father and recover the fortunes of their family; The story is told from a child's point of view. The narrator is Oswald, but on the first page he announces: "It is one of us that tells this story – but I shall not tell you which: only at the very end perhaps I will. While the story is going on you may be trying to guess, only I bet you don't." Their adventures were both touching and funny. The Story of the Treasure Seekers was the first novel for children by Nesbit; it and her later novels exerted considerable influence on subsequent English children's literature, most notably Arthur Ransome's books and C. S. Lewis'The Chronicles of Narnia. Edith Nesbit, the author of the book, was an English author who wrote children's book using the name E. Nesbit. She published approximately forty books for children, and was dubbed "the first modern writer for children" by her biographer Julia Briggs. So well written and funny. From a child's point of view. Good for adults and children with a good understanding of Victorian literature. Scroll Up and Get Your Copy! • The Life of Our Lord in Simple Language for Little Children:

    Anonymous

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 16, 2016)
In preparing this brief account of the chief incidents in Our Lord's Life, the writer has endeavoured to keep as close as possible to the sacred text; its divine simplicity being far preferable to any other style of writing the story. The easiest words and those most familiar to children have generally been used and every effort has been made to adapt the volume to the intelligence of the young with the view of instilling into their minds the love of our Saviour for mankind as shown in the beautiful story of His life. KING DAVID. In ages past God made the world: the earth, the sea, the hills, the streams, the trees; the fish, birds and beasts; last of all He made Adam, the first man, and Eve his wife, and they lived in the Garden of Eden. They were quite good at first, but tempted by Satan they ate the fruit of a tree God told them not to eat, and that brought sin into the world; they could not live for ever now, they must die; but that their souls might go to heaven, God's own Son said He would come down on earth and die to save them. God said His Son should be born of Abraham's nation, and should be one of the sons of the line of King David, who sang the sweet psalms in praise of God. Abraham was a good man, so good that God called him His friend; and from him came the people called Jews. David was one of their kings. God always keeps His word, but He makes men wait till it is His time to do as He says; and it was a long, long time after Abraham and David that our Lord came to live among men. At last God sent His angel Gabriel to a young maiden, named Mary, who lived at a town called Nazareth, to tell her that God loved her, and that she should have God's Son for her own son. Our Lord would be her little babe. When Mary saw the angel she was at first afraid, but he said to her, "Fear not, Mary," and he told her that she must call the child's name Jesus—that means Saviour—for He would save the people from their sins. Then Mary must have been glad. She said, "I am God's servant; may His will be done." Mary was to be the wife of her cousin Joseph—they were both of David's family—so the angel went and told him too, that Mary should have God's Son for her own, and that he must call the child Jesus.
  • Bird Children:

    Elizabeth Gordon

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 15, 2016)
BIRDS are only another expression of God’s love, and we are told that not even a sparrow shall fall to the ground without the notice of the Father. Birds are poetry come to life and set to music. If you should stand at the edge of a forest at sundown and hear the birds singing their good-night songs, hear the sleepy little notes grow fainter and fainter until the silence came,—then when the dusk had deepened, you should hear the night birds begin their plaintive songs, you would realize what a different place our beautiful world would be without birds. Even in great cities we have always some birds. The saucy little sparrow, who comes so boldly begging crumbs at your window, likes the cities best. Only very thoughtless people, or those who do not understand, would harm or frighten a bird. They are real little people, and I am sure that when you have come to know them you will love them as much as you have learned to love the Flower Children..

The idea of the Three magic Pearls and the characters of Prince Inga, Zella, Nikobob, King Rinkitink, and Bilbil the goat, as well as the depiction of Kaliko as the Nome King are all very captivating and makes the book a sublime thrill to read. There's actually some real dramatic tension during Prince Inga's multiple attempts to rescue his parents and their people from Regos and Coregos and especially when Prince Inga and Rinkitink are separated and challenged by the Nome King's magic! Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 21, 2016)
There came a soldier marching down the high road-one, two! one, two! He had his knapsack on his back and his sword at his side as he came home from the wars. On the road he met a witch, an ugly old witch, a witch whose lower lip dangled right down on her chest. "Good evening, soldier," she said. "What a fine sword you've got there, and what a big knapsack. Aren't you every inch a soldier! And now you shall have money, as much as you please." "That's very kind, you old witch," said the soldier. "See that big tree." The witch pointed to one near by them. "It's hollow to the roots. Climb to the top of the trunk and you'll find a hole through which you can let yourself down deep under the tree. I'll tie a rope around your middle, so that when you call me I can pull you up again."

Her father is the captain of a sailing schooner, and her constant companion is Cap'n Bill Weedles, a retired sailor with a wooden leg. They also encounter a villain called Zog the Magician, a monstrous hybrid of man, animal, and fish. Zog and his sea devils capture them and hold them prisoner. The two protagonists discover that many sailors thought to have been drowned have actually been captured and enslaved by Zog. • The Railway Children

    E. Nesbit

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 7, 2016)
Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/U80LCr --------- The Railway Children The story concerns a family who move from London to "The Three Chimneys", a house near the railway in Yorkshire, after the father, who works at the Foreign Office, is imprisoned after being falsely accused of spying. The children befriend an Old Gentleman who regularly takes the 9:15 train near their home; he is eventually able to help prove their father's innocence, and the family is reunited. The family take care of a Russian exile, Mr Szczepansky, who came to England looking for his family (later located) and Jim, the grandson of the Old Gentleman, who suffers a broken leg in a tunnel. The theme of an innocent man being falsely imprisoned for espionage and finally vindicated might have been influenced by the Dreyfus Affair, which was a prominent worldwide news item a few years before the book was written. The Russian exile, persecuted by the Tsars for writing "a beautiful book about poor people and how to help them" and subsequently helped by the children, was most likely an amalgam of the real-life dissidents Sergius Stepniak and Peter Kropotkin who were both friends of the author. The whole journey throughout this book was magical. It is nostalgic. It is beautiful. This can be one of the best children’s stories you have ever read in your life. Facts and Trivia About the Book: 1. The story has been adapted for the screen six times to date, including four television series, a feature film, and a made-for-television film. 2. It was adapted for radio by Marcy Kahan and produced by John Taylor. It stars Paul Copley, Timothy Bateson and Victoria Carling and was first heard in 1991. 3. The story has been adapted as a television series four times by the BBC. The first of these, in 1951, was in 8 episodes of 30 minutes each. A second adaptation was then produced, which re-used some of the film from the original series but also contained new material with slight cast changes. This had 4 episodes of 60 minutes each. The BBC again revisited the story with an 8-episode series in 1957 and a 7-episode series in 1968. The 1968 adaptation was placed 96th in the BFI's 100 Greatest British Television Programmes poll of 2000. It starred Jenny Agutter as Roberta and Gillian Bailey as Phyllis. Of all the TV adaptations, only the 1968 version is known to be extant (it is currently available on DVD); the rest may be lost. Scroll Up and Grab Your Copy!
