About the Book France made up the bulk of the region that was known to the Romans as Gaul. The Gauls, the largest ethno-linguistic group, were Celtic people speaking the Gaulish language. In the later stages of the Roman Empire, Gaul was subject to barbarian raids and migration, most importantly by the Germanic Franks. In 1328 began a series of conflicts known as the Hundred Years' War between the House of Valois and the House of Plantagenet. In the 16th century France developed a great colonial empire, reaching a zenith under the rule of Louis XIV, "The Sun King", who built the Versailles Palace. The monarchy was overthrown in the French Revolution, which resulted in the rise of Napoleon and the Napoleonic Wars, resulting in millions of deaths throughout Europe. In the 19th century France wavered between republic and monarchy until the French Third Republic of 1870. France was the scene of heavy fighting against Germany in World War 1 and was conquered by Nazi Germany in World War 2, resulting in a collaborationist Vichy regime (lasting to 1942). Matilda Betham-Edwards (1836–1919) was an English novelist, travel writer and Francophile, and also a prolific poet. In addition she wrote several children’s books and corresponded with well-known English male poets of the day. Her first novel, The White House by the Sea (1857) was an immediate success, reprinted several times, pirated in the United States, and in print for forty years. Matilda studied French and German abroad and then settled with her sister in Suffolk to manage the farm which had belonged to her father. Not content, however, with purely rural occupations, she contributed from time to time to Household Words, having the advantage at this time of the friendship of Charles Dickens and an early association with Charles and Mary Lamb, friends of her mother. On her sister’s death, she moved to London and wrote a number of novels of French life based on her frequent visits to France and her intimate knowledge of provincial French homes, as well as children’s books, and non-fiction books about France. She was published by George and Richard Bentley. She stayed in Algeria with the feminist educationalist Barbara Bodichon and visited France and Spain with her. Of Huguenot descent, she considered France her second native land and made it her mission to bring about better understanding and sympathy between the two countries which shared her allegiance. In this way, she did much to promote a better understanding between English and French people. The French government made her an Officier de l’Instruction Publique de France in recognition of her untiring efforts towards the establishment of a genuine and lasting entente cordiale. She was awarded a medal at the Franco-British Exhibition (1908). Betham-Edwards is often cited in anthologies of lesbian poetry, but there is no strong evidence that she had lesbian tendencies. She died in Hastings, Sussex in 1919.
