  • Campaigning with Crook and Stories of Army Life

    Charles King

Paperback (Digital Scanning Inc., June 10, 2001)
Campaigning with Crook is one of Charles King’s most popular books and is considered one of the best first-person accounts of the western Indian Wars of over 100 years ago. Soldier, military historian and novelist, King was one of the few military officers to have served in all U.S. war efforts from the Civil War through World War I. Written by then Captain King in 1880, it details his service as a lieutenant in the 5th Cavalry during the Sioux campaign of 1876, the same unit where William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was chief scout and close friend.

    Charles King

Hardcover (University of Oklahoma Press, Jan. 1, 1964)
1964, hardcover edition (this title was first published in 1880; here that title is reprinted with a fresh new introduction by Don Russell), Western Frontier Library, Volume 25, University of Oklahoma Press, OK. 166 pages. Very nicely printed. Black and white illustrations, 7 of them, plus a map on page 9. Charles King led an incredible life. When he died in 1933, he was credited with 70 years of military service. This is the story of the Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition in 1876. Fascinating, true account of a soldier's life throughout, by a military man / author who, in a very long life, wrote 69 books.
