Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 3, 2016)
Peter is a seven-day-old infant who, "like all infants", used to be part bird. Peter has complete faith in his flying abilities, so, upon hearing a discussion of his adult life, he is able to escape out of the window of his London home and return to Kensington Gardens. Upon returning to the Gardens, Peter is shocked to learn from the crow Solomon Caw that he is not still a bird, but more like a human – Solomon says he is crossed between them as a "Betwixt-and-Between". Unfortunately, Peter now knows he cannot fly, so he is stranded in Kensington Gardens.

Originally part of the story "The Little White Bird", Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens introduced J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan to the world of literature. In this adventure baby Peter discovers that he used to be a bird and flies to Kensington Gardens for adventures with birds and fairies. "You must see for yourselves that it will be difficult to follow Peter Pan's adventures unless you are familiar with the Kensington Gardens. They are in London, where the King lives, and I used to take David there nearly every day unless he was looking decidedly flushed. No child has ever been in the whole of the Gardens, because it is so soon time to turn back. The reason it is soon time to turn back is that, if you are as small as David, you sleep from twelve to one. If your mother was not so sure that you sleep from twelve to one, you could most likely see the whole of them."Beautifully Illustrated

  • Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

    J. M. Barrie

Audio CD (IDB Productions, July 5, 2010)
Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens is one of four works by J.M. Barrie featuring the indomitable, precocious character, Peter Pan. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens is not as well known as the play, Peter Pan, and the subsequent novel, Peter and Wendy. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens portrays Peter as an infant who sneaks out of his London home and makes his way into Kensington Gardens. Peter understands that all infants were once birds, and believes he still has flying capabilities. When he arrives in Kensington Gardens it is closed, and the fairies who reside there are able to roam about freely. Peter Pan meets a crow who informs him that, in fact, Peter is no longer a bird and cannot fly. Only able to get about on foot, Peter Pan constructs a boat out of a thrush’s nest to navigate the Serpentine River, which runs through the gardens. Seemingly stranded there, Peter makes friends with the fairies and the birds. He also meets Maimie, a girl lost in the gardens. (The famous J.M. Barrie character, Wendy, is considered to be based on Peter Pan’s first love, Maimie.) Eventually, the fairies take pity on Peter and help him return to his mother. But Peter Pan feels torn between his two homes: Kensington Gardens and his house in London. Where will he choose to stay? Considered a prequel to Peter and Wendy, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens is the beginning of the story about the boy who refused to grow up. Barrie transforms London and Kensington Gardens into a magical, fantastical place, full of adventure, reveries, and fairy-lands, where a boy can play and let his imagination soar. J. M. Barrie

    Paperback (Penguin, Sept. 1, 1995)
In 1902, nine years before the publication of the classic novel Peter and Wendy, Peter Pan made his first appearance in several chapters of another book by James M. Barrie called The Little White Bird. These were later published as a separate book, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. In this fragile Victorian fantasy, Barrie gives us our first glimpse of the impish sprite who escaped through the nursery window and danced with fairies in London...
