This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. As a young man, Robert Louis Stevenson made a canoe voyage along the rivers and canals of Belgium and Northern France, continuing on foot in the Loire region. This is his little-known account of that voyage, with a glimpse of the changing scenery along the route captured in the watercolour and ink illustrations. For today's traveller retracing the journey, the route has been divided into four itineraries, each with maps, recommended hotels and places of interest, as part of a practical guide compiled.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

To equip so small a book with a preface is, I am half afraid, to sin against proportion. But a preface is more than an author can resist, for it is the reward of his labours. When the foundation stone is laid, the architect appears with his plans, and struts for an hour before the public eye. So with the writer in his preface: he may have never a word to say, but he must show himself for a moment in the portico, hat in hand, and with an urbane demeanour.

"After a good woman, and a good book, and tobacco, there is nothing so agreeable on earth as a river. ." In 1876, the young Robert Louis Stevenson and his friend Walter Simpson set out on an expedition along the waterways of Belgium and northern France. Their journey, in two canoes named Cigarette and Arethusa, took them from Antwerp in Belgium to Pontoise, near Paris. In an age when travelling in such an uncomfortable fashion for leisure was far from common, the two men were frequently mistaken for itinerant pedlars and were refused accomodation on more than one occasion. The sight of their canoes, however, caused great excitement in the small villages they passed along the way. Stevenson transcribed his notes from the journey to create An Inland Voyage, which, in 1878, became his first commercially published book.
