This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. <i>The English Lakes</i> is a lovely exploration of the English Lake District and includes 75 delightful paintings by A. Heaton Cooper. <i>The English Lakes</i> focuses on the nature of the lakes and the natural phenomena that surround them. The result is a travelogue that helps the reader experience what it is like to travel down the lakes on various watercraft, as well as journey throughout the region by foot. The Lake District is most closely associated with the Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, De Quincey, Southey and others. Palmer travels through the major waterways, stopping at hotels, villages and cottages and relating stories about the poets, particularly Wordsworth. In one memorable chapter, Palmer stays in a cottage on Rothay, recreating the life of William Wordsworth. He explores Rydal and Grasmere, where some of Wordsworth's most famous poems were written, including "The Prelude." <i>The English Lake</i> also discusses local legends like the Hermit of Derwentwater on St. Herberts Island. The island was named after St. Herbert, who was a disciple of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. He chose the remote location so that nothing could distract him from constant prayer. St. Herbert died on the same day as St. Cuthbert and it was then that St. Herbert's Island became a place of pilgrimage.<i>The English Lake</i> feels like a conversation between the reader, Palmer and the lakes themselves. Son of a wealthy Glas gow merchant, winner of the Newdigate and a first classman at Oxford, and scarcely less conspicuous for his athletic feats and sporting wagers, young Wilson bought the land at Elleray while an undergraduate and built a house on it later, after the passing of an unsatisfactory love affair. As Christopher North every lover of the rod with any sense of its literature knows him yet. Nor would all this be worthy of record were it not that the brilliant little band who did none of these things held Wilson of Elleray as one of themselves. Losing his fortune ten years later through a defaulting trustee, he became the brilliant supporter of Black-wood and Professor of Moral Philosophy in Edinburgh University, though always retaining his connection with Windermere.
