A summer at the seashore with Cousin Dorothy is an exciting enough prospect for the Bobbsey Twins, who, of course, don't know of the other adventures awaiting them there.Visiting the Lakeside Amusement Park, Bert and Nan, Freddie and Flossie, and Dorothy make a new friend, Cindy, whose father has been lost in an airplane crash at sea. And sharp-eyed Freddie catches a glimpse of the thief who has eluded police after stealing a sackful of $100 bills.Together the children enjoy all the pleasures of the seashore, but strange and intriguing things keep happening too. Nan finds a bottle washed ashore by the waves, containing a message from someone marooned on an island. And there is the mystery of the vanishing boats. First, the canoe is stolen from the water carnival, then Freddie's toy sailboat floats away to seas, and finally the motorboat vanishes from its mooring. But the Bobbsey Twins, who love mysteries, eventually put all the clues together to find the answer and win a surprisingly reward!

"We didn't forget Snoop this time," exclaimed Freddie, following close on Dinah's heels, with the box contai-ning Snoop, his pet cat, who always went traveling with the little fellow. "I'm glad I covered up the ferns with wet paper," Flossie remarked, "for this sun would surely kill them if it could get at them." "Bert, you may carry my satchel," said Mrs. Bobbsey, "and be careful, as there are some glasses of jelly in it, you know."

  • The Bobbsey Twins at the Seashore

    Laura Lee Hope

Hardcover (Grosset and Dunlap, Jan. 1, 1950)
The Bobbsey Twins at the Seashore finds the Bobbsey children and their parents on their way to a new summer adventure at the beach. We join the two sets of twins-Nan and Bert, age eight, and Freddie and Flossie, age four-on the train to Ocean Cliff. After a distressing ride with a wayward stage driver, the family arrives at the home of Aunt Emily and Uncle William, where the twins are happy to become reaquainted with their cousin Dorothy, a jolly and brave nine-year-old. The seashore provides many new pastimes-and dangers-for the children with new places to explore(and new opportunities to become lost), elaborate preparations for a boat carnival, high jinks with their new friends, and an affecting experience with Nellie McLaughlin, the lovely down-on-her-luck cash-girl first encountered in "The Bobbsey Twins in the Country."
