  • Green Mansions: A Romance of the Tropical Forest

    W. H. Hudson, Keith Henderson

Hardcover (Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, March 15, 1931)
This exotic romance of the Venezuelan jungle is Hudson's best-known work, a mystical romance taking place in the tropical jungles of Venezuela. It is in the form of a first-person narrative to a friend by Abel Guevaz de Argensola, who has returned to civilization after having been a political refugee in Venezuela. He fled to the wilderness of the upper reaches of the Orinoco River and lived among the Indian tribes. He explored a forest that the Indians were afraid to enter and there heard a beautiful voice that stayed near him; the owner remained unseen. The Indians warned him that it was the voice of the Didi's daughter (the Didi was an evil spirit). Abel discovered that the voice in fact belonged to a shy and beautiful girl who stopped him from killing a snake; she protected all living creatures. He followed the girl and suffered a serious fall. ~Hudson himself had been born and raised (by American parents) in Argentina, but because of ill health in his twenties he had to leave the tropics for England.~" Text illustrations in full page and double page by Keith Henderson. "Green Mansions" was adapted for the screen in 1959, directed by Mel Ferrer and starring Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Hopkins.
