  • The Rose and the Ring

    William Makepeace Thackery

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 7, 2018)
The Rose and the Ring by William Makepeace Thackery William Makepeace Thackery (1811–1863) was an English novelist. In his own day, he was considered second only to Charles Dickens as a writer. Today, he is best remembered for his satiric novel, Vanity Fair. Thackery calls The Rose and the Ring a “fireside pantomime,” that is, a pantomime in book form. Pantomime is a uniquely English holiday tradition, a stage production mixing fairy tales, magic, mayhem, and audience participation. Thackery here mixes all these with a gently satiric look at our ideas of beauty, privilege, obligation, and justice. Although Christmas itself is never mentioned, Thackery included it among the Christmas books he authored under the pen-name “M.A. Titmarsh.” We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. • The Rose and the Ring

    William Makepeace Thackeray

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 25, 2016)
The Rose and the Ring is one of those special literary treats which happen when a writer for adults turns (in this case) his attention to the world of children. It's a classic fairy tale, told with Thackeray's customary insight into characters. In The Rose and the Ring, Thackeray’s fondness for children bubbles out full of fun and frolic. No boy or girl should miss the pleasure of meeting Countess Gruffanuff, Angellica, Hedzoff and the other dwellers of Paflogonia. “A fireside pantomime for great and small children. The children and the world owe this delightful absurdity to a little girl friend of Mr. Thackeray, as it was written to amuse her during an illness. The rose and the ring each had the power of making its wearer charming in the eyes of any beholder. Naturally as they changed hands some complications of affections arose.” -American institute of Child Life “Like Dickens, Thackeray wrote several Christmas books, the best known of which is the extraordinarily light and playful extravaganza of ‘The Rose and the Ring,’ a story intended for children, but most thoroughly enjoyed by such children as are grown up. We consider ‘The Rose and the Ring’ indeed as almost one of his great works. It is so absolutely the best thing of its kind, full of such genial humor and such splendid absurdity, carried on just to the proper limit and never allowed to run over into buffoonery.” -Margaret Oliphant “A quaint and racy fairy tale.” -The Athenaeum

  • The Rose and the Ring

    William Makepeace Thackeray

Paperback (Dodo Press, Feb. 6, 2009)
William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair (1847), a panoramic portrait of English society. Thackeray began as a satirist and parodist, with a sneaking fondness for roguish upstarts like Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair, Barry Lyndon in Barry Lyndon (1844) and Catherine in Catherine (1839). In his earliest works, writing under such pseudonyms as Charles James Yellowplush, Michael Angelo Titmarsh and George Savage Fitz-Boodle, he tended towards the savage in his attacks on high society, military prowess, the institution of marriage and hypocrisy. His writing career really began with a series of satirical sketches now usually known as The Yellowplush Papers, which appeared in Fraser's Magazine beginning in 1837. Between May 1839 and February 1840, Fraser's published the work sometimes considered Thackeray's first novel, Catherine. His other works include: The Fitz-Boodle Papers (1842), Men's Wives (1842), The History of Pendennis (1848), The History of Henry Esmond, Esq., (1852), The Newcomes (1853) and The Rose and the Ring (1855).
