This edition includes 10 illustrations. Western exposure to Eastern works of art and literature is more prominent now than it has ever been, but even in the last century this was not always so. Enter the Gitanjali, a collection of poems from renowned Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, here translated by the Indian Society of London. His work took England by storm when it was published in 1912, the first time this prophet-like figure in his native India reached a substantial, international audience. The beauty and lyricism of the poems is equaled only by their expressive warmth, for which Tagore won a Nobel Peace Prize.

    Rabindranath Tagore

language (Om Books International, Jan. 6, 2017)
Rabindranath Tagore, like Chaucer's forerunners, writes music for his words, and one understands at every momentthat he is so abundant, so spontaneous, so daring in his passion, so full of surprise, because he is doing something which has never seemed strange, unnatural, or in need of defence. He is an exponent of the Bengal Renaissance, was a polymath who not only reformed Bengali literature and music, but also combined Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the 19th and 20th centuries. He also won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for Gitanjali, a profound collection of songs he authored. Also called the "the Bard of Bengal", Tagore's poetry is both spiritual and effervescent. Along with a writer, Tagore was a humanist, and belived in universal internationalism. He was an ardent supporter of India's freedom from the colonial regime. Other seminal works by him include Gora and Ghare-Baire, while he also wrote plays like Visarjan, Chandalika, and The Post Office. Tagore is also responsible for the composition of the national anthems of India and Bangladesh, and is said to have inspired Sri Lanka's national anthem as well. He passed away in 1941.

    Rabindranath Tagore

Paperback (Rupa Publications Private Limited, Feb. 1, 2002)
Containing an assortment of one hundred and three poems, Gitanjali: Rabindranath Tagore is an English translation of various poems and works of the legendary Indian poet Shri Rabindranath Tagore. Translated by Tagore himself, the book contains fifty-three translated poems from the original Bengali version of Gitanjali: Rabindranath Tagore, as well as fifty other poems from eight of his other works on poetry and a drama titled Achalayatan. An integration of two words, 'Git' and 'Anjali,' meaning song and offering respectively, the literal meaning of the word is 'offering of songs.' and because of the strong devotional tone and subliminal spiritual incitation, the book can be said to have devotion to god as its theme. It highlights the poet's intense response to the magnificence of the universe or rather an affirmation of life with all its abundance, mystery and diversity. Though the translator and author of the original book are the same, the translations are radical, involving certain modifications and on the other hand, leaving out whole segments. Gitanjali: Rabindranath Tagore was published by Rupa in the year 2002, as a paperback edition.
