This book was excellent for understanding the time period of the Revolutionary War. You will see this novel is more of a character study. It is the story of a boy through his growing into early manhood in North Carolina. All through the book you will see him discovering faults of his own and faults in other people, and good qualities he wants to improve upon. The plot line takes you through his thoughts and opinions of being a colonist, and it helps you to see the attitudes of people on both sides of the war. It is fun and interesting that the author has written out all the accents of the characters, for example, Scottish, southern black, English, New Englanders, and others. ( Amazon customer)
