  • McGuffey's First Eclectic Reader: Phonically enriched with the Augmented Alphabet

    William McGuffey, Tobias Peers

    eBook (, Jan. 18, 2016)
This is William McGuffey's first graded reader. It has been formatted to include diacritics (letter markings) that make it clear what sound the letters in a word represent. For example, the word 'Monday' is pronounced 'Munday'. There is a mark that sits above the 'o' in this edition that indicates to the reader that it should be pronounced like the 'u' in Sun (like-wise the 'o' in 'son', 'month', 'some', 'come', ...). Similarly there is a mark that sits above the 'a' in 'any'. 'Any' is pronounced 'Eny'. The mark over the 'a' in 'any' indicates that it should be pronounced like the 'e' in 'elf' (like-wise 'many', 'said', 'anyone', 'anything',...). By introducing a comprehensive set of augmentations English spelling becomes regular. This means thousands of words, whose spellings are not completely regular no longer have to be learnt as exceptions.McGuffey's readers originally used a similar system of markings to correct for the amiguities in English spelling. It was written in the early 1800s and the series sold over 100 million copies. The concept of adding markings to under-determined letters was 're-discovered'/'re-developed' in the 2000s. The Augmented Alphabet is constructed from diacritics that are available in existing font encodings. This allows the modern markings to be applied semi-automatically by the publisher. The illustrations and text in this book has been reprocessed to use this modern system.

Born in 1800, William Holmes McGuffey had a remarkable ability to memorize, and could commit to mind entire books of the Bible. After becoming a teacher at the age of 14, classroom size was just one of several challenges faced by McGuffey. In many one-teacher schools, students’ ages varied from six to twenty-one, and few textbooks existed. In 1835, a publishing firm asked McGuffey to create a series of graded Readers for primary level students. The series consisted of stories, poems, essays and speeches and it is estimated that at least 120 million copies of McGuffey's Readers were sold between 1836 and 1960, placing its sales in a category with the Bible and Webster’s Dictionary.Since 1961 they have continued to sell at a rate of some 30,000 copies a year. No other textbook bearing a single person's name has come close to that mark.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 18, 2016)
Excerpt from opening lines: This First Reader may be used in teaching reading by any of the methods in common use; but it is especially adapted to the Phonic Method, the Word Method, or a combination of the two. I. Phonic Method.—First teach the elementary sounds and their representative, the letters marked with diacriticals, as they occur in the lessons; then, the formation of words by the combination of these sounds. For instance, teach the pupil to identify the characters a, o, n, d, g, r, and th, in Lesson I, as the representatives of certain elementary sounds; then teach him to form the words at the head of the lesson, then other words, as nag, on, and, etc. Pursue a similar course in teaching the succeeding lessons. Having read a few lessons in this manner, begin to teach the names of the letters and the spelling of words, and require the groups, "a man," "the man," "a pen," to be read as a good reader would pronounce single words.
