  • The Flying Saucers Are Real

    Donald Keyhoe

    Paperback (Gutter Books LLC, )
Presented for a new generation, this thrilling reprint of the very first book-length investigation into the UFO phenomenon follows in the pulp tradition of the original 1950 pressing, which sold more than half a million copies. Rumored to be the inspiration for the character of Fox Mulder of The X-Files, leading ufologist Donald Keyhoe delivers the results of his groundbreaking research in a style that is at once terse and businesslike, imbued with a sense of wonder at the mysteries and possibilities he is confronting. Keyhoe argues that aliens—whatever their origins or intentions—do not seem hostile and have likely been surveilling the Earth for 200 years or more, though Keyhoe writes that their "observation suddenly increased in 1947, following the series of A-bomb explosions in 1945." This stunning work of nonfiction touched off everything we associate with the UFO phenomenon today—the widespread paranoia, the government disinformation campaigns, and the inevitable conclusion, for many people the world over, that UFOs exist and do not have an Earthly origin.

"Answers have been - and will be - drawn from such factors as guided missile research activity, balloons, astronomical phenomena. . . . But there are still question marks. "Possibilities that the saucers are foreign aircraft have also been considered. . . . But observations based on nuclear power plant research in this country label as 'highly improbable' the existence on Earth of engines small enough to have Powered the saucers.

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
One of the very first writings to discuss the phenomenon of Unidentified Flying Objects, Donald Keyhoe’s The Flying Saucers Are Real is a groundbreaking book, thoroughly researched, well-organized and written in a novelistic style that captivates the reader. Keyhoe has written spy fiction and mystery as well and was considered to be a very talented narrator, talent that shows in this book, too, but without becoming overtly romantic or mysterious – the facts are presented in a credible, matter-of-fact way, without exaggerated emotional involvement by the author. Keyhoe was also an engineer – he graduated in Annapolis from the Naval Academy, so his book makes a credible source when it comes to the description of the technologies used in aeronautics. The text is relatively short, with an extensive apparatus. The author cites magazine and newspaper articles as well as official press releases and records kept in Air Force archives, and he offers the reader his own views about UFO sightings and similar events recorded until 1949 (the book was published in 1950). The message that Keyhoe wants to convey is that extraterrestrials have been visiting our planet for at least two centuries, but the authorities kept the reports that document these visits secret. Extraterrestrial visits became more frequent after the nuclear weapon tests in 1945 and this phenomenon has led to a change in official policy regarding close encounters and other such events – the existence of the events is no longer denied, the public being progressively let in on these former secrets. This book elevated Donald Keyhoe among the most prominent civilian UFO researchers of his time and established him as an expert who grounds his conclusions in documented facts - so much so that, in 1957, he was named the leader of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP).

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 12, 2008)
Book Description: "This was one of the first books published about the UFO phenomena. We are fortunate that it ended up in the public domain. It is a template for much of what would follow: the paranoia, the government disinformation, the inescapable conclusion that the saucers are not of this earth. Keyhoe, with his spare, matter of fact writing style, which also conveys a profound sense of wonder, has to be the prototype for the deadpan Fox Mulder of the X-Files.On one hand we can see the birth of a key modern mythology. On the other, there is a body of almost naive evidence in this text unpolluted by that very mythology. The case studies are real. The witnesses were highly reliable. These cases are still unexplained."
