To create it, the author read a bunch of children the original stories and then had them re-create the stories in their own words, which were then copied down and turned into the current strange form of the stories. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. About the Book Two major alternative methods are used to teach reading. Traditionally, "Phonics" has been used, which emphasizes the alphabetic principle – that letters represent the sounds of speech, and that there are systematic and predictable relationships between written letters and spoken words. Students also learn how to segment and "chunk" letter sounds together in order to blend them to form words. The alternative "Whole language" method of teaching reading instead emphasizes literature and text comprehension. Students are taught to apply critical thinking strategies, and to use context to "guess" words that they do not recognize.
