    Hardcover (Blurb, April 7, 2019)
The cordial reception given the Burgess Bird Book for Children, together with numerous letters to the author asking for information on the habits and characteristics of many of the mammals of America, led to the preparation of this volume, The Burgess Animal Book for Children. It is offered merely as an introduction to the four-footed friends, little and big, which form so important a part of the wild life of the United States and Canada. There has been no attempt to describe or classify sub-species. That is for the scientist and student with specific interests. The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with the larger groups--orders, families, and divisions of the latter, so that typical representatives may be recognized and their habits understood.

This spectacular story by Thornton Burgess offers a lively narrative and descriptions of the many animals Peter Rabbit encounters in each and every chapter. We join Peter Rabbit who is very curious about the other animals in his forest. Mother Goose agrees to teach him about the creatures and their nature, and takes him on a journey through the forest to find them. Gradually, the entire mammalian order is covered by the pair, as they enjoy their adventuring through the forested lands. Featuring many creatures of interest to children, this superb text is both a work of fiction and an educational introduction to animals and their qualities. Lively and filled with dialogue between the characters, this classic text is rare for combining both teaching with a genuinely excellent story. The author Thornton Burgess held animals in high regard, and would campaign for their preservation and protection in the wild. This belief is reflected in the text, which is dedicated to the efforts of conservationists around the world who preserve animals and protection them from hunting, habitat destruction and other perils which are liable to lead them to extinction.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 16, 2016)
The Burgess Animal Book for Children by Thornton W. Burgess, with illustrations by Louis Agassiz Fuertes."Among the most admirable and entertaining writers of animal stories, Thornton W. Burgess ranks at the top of the list. He combines a sympathetic love for the little woodfolk with an accuracy as to details worthy of a professional naturalist. 'The Burgess Animal Book for Children' will be a delight to a host of eager-eyed readers." — Dr. E. W. Nelson, Chief, Biological Survey, United States Department of Agriculture. To answer Peter Rabbit’s questions about his relatives, Old Mother Nature holds a school for the animals every day at sun-up for a month. Encouraging the animals to notice the differences between them and to offer their observa-tions of animal behavior, Old Mother Nature helps them all gain a greater understanding of the mammals of North America. Starting with the animals close to home, the school moves in ever-widening circles to encompass the animals of the far west and the extreme north, as well. A fine introduction to mammals for students in the primary grades. This companion volume to "The Burgess Bird Book for Children" is written in the same vein, a story book which is at the same time an authoritative handbook on the land animals of America, describing them and their habits that they will be instantly recognized when seen.
