William Makepeace Thackeray, Godfrey Kneller, Rachel Esmond Warrington

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, April 3, 2017)
The History of Henry Esmond is a historical novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, originally published in 1852. The book tells the story of the early life of Henry Esmond, a colonel in the service of Queen Anne of England. Using sporadically the first and third persons, Henry Esmond relates his own history in memoir fashion. The novel opens on Henry as a boy – the supposedly illegitimate (and eventually orphaned) son of Thomas, the third Viscount Castlewood, and cousin of the Jacobite fourth viscount, Francis, and his wife, the Lady Castlewood. These successors to the Castlewood estate and peerage, following the death of Henry's father, foster the boy, and he remains with them throughout his youth and early adulthood.

  • The History of Henry Esmond

William Makepeace Thackeray, W M Thackeray, Gordon Griffin

    (Isis, Sept. 1, 2005)
Set in the reign of Queen Anne. Thackeray's novel follows the troubled progress of Henry Esmond Esq., a gentleman and an officer in Marlborough's army. Enamoured of the Jacobite Lady Castlewood and her wayward daughter Beatrix, he distinguishes himself in Marlborough's campaigns against Louis XIV, but comes to grief in an ingenious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to depose George I in favor of the Old Pretender. He continues to wrestle with an emotional allegiance to the Old Tory-Catholic England until, disillusioned, he eventually comes to terms with the whiggish-Protestant future.
