  • The Story of the Mikado

    William Schwenck Gilbert

    (Forgotten Books, Jan. 29, 2018)
The Story of the Mikado is one of the many fantastic operettas written by renowned duo Gilbert and Sullivan. During their 25 year partnership the pair wrote 14 comic operas The Mikado being one of their most popular shows along with HMS Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance. The Mikado is a wonderful example of their brilliant playwriting skills and has been performed worldwide since its first appearance in 1885.The play is set in Japan, which allowed Gilbert to write in a highly satirical way about British institutions and politics by disguising them as Japanese constitutions. The story follows that of the young love of Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum and the troubles they face trying to be with one another. It is a highly comical play with great music that complements the witty libretto brilliantly. This version is also beautifully illustrated by Alice B. Woodward which adds a lovely appeal to the book. For those who are avidly interesting in the famous twosome or those just entering their world this is a wonderful play for both young and old; a great classic for the whole family to enjoy.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
  • The Story of the Mikado

    W. S. Gilbert

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, July 6, 2019)
The Story of the Mikado The Mikado; or, The Town of Titipu is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert, their ninth of fourteen operatic collaborations. It opened on 14 March 1885, in London, where it ran at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances, which was the second-longest run for any work of musical theatre and one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time. Before the end of 1885, it was estimated that, in Europe and America, at least 150 companies were producing the opera. The Mikado remains the most frequently performed Savoy Opera, and it is especially popular with amateur and school productions. The work has been translated into numerous languages and is one of the most frequently played musical theatre pieces in history. Setting the opera in Japan, an exotic locale far away from Britain, allowed Gilbert to satirise British politics and institutions more freely by disguising them as Japanese. Gilbert used foreign or fictional locales in several operas, including The Mikado, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Utopia, Limited and The Grand Duke, to soften the impact of his pointed satire of British institutions.
