Two of his most famous pieces are the Utopian satire 'Erewhon' and the posthumous novel 'The Way of All Flesh.' He is also known for examining Christian orthodoxy, substantive studies of Darwin's evolutionary thought, studies of Italian art and aesthetics, and works of literary history and criticism. Butler's prose translations of 'The Iliad' and 'The Odyssey' remain in use to this day. Butler's translation of 'The Iliad' was originally published in London by Longmans, Green, in 1898. His translation of 'The Odyssey' was also published by Longmans, Green, in 1902. In this edition, each epic is accompanied by a preface by Butler and a list of Principal Personages in the work.

    Homer

    eBook (JA, Oct. 10, 2017)
While Homer's existence as a historical person is still a topic of debate, the writings attributed to the name have made their mark not only on Greek history and literature, but upon western civilization itself. Homer's epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, laid the foundation upon which Ancient Greece developed not only its culture, but its societal values, religious beliefs, and practice of warfare as well. This publication features the Samuel Butler translation, and while it strays from the poetic style reproduced by more well known translators like Robert Fagles and Robert Fitzgerald, the vision of the epics as if they were prose found in modern novels take their best form under Butler's most capable hand.

  • Iliad & Odyssey

    Homer, Anthony Heald

Audio CD (Blackstone Audio, Inc., Oct. 1, 2008)
[Translation by W.H.D. Rouse] [Read by Anthony Heald] Homer's Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world's greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns, the heroism and treachery of its combatants unmatched in song and story. Driven by fierce passions and loyalties, men and gods battle to a devastating conclusion. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife, Penelope. Though the stormy god of the ocean has sworn vengeance against him, and witches and sirens try to lure him off course, Odysseus is clever and has the brilliant goddess Athena on his side.

Homer (9th or 8th century B.C.) is the presumed author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the two greatest epic poems of ancient Greece. Virtually nothing is known about his life. Tradition has it that he was blind. Most scholars believe he composed the Iliad and the Odyssey by relying on oral traditions. Their value lies chiefly in the poetry itself, moving from sublime passages about the gods and heroic exploits to passages expressing deep human emotion.
