ā€œIf you want to understand me,ā€ says Pope Francis, ā€œread this book.ā€Speaking to a planeload of reporters on his way home from a visit to the Philippines in January 2015, the Pope explained that a reading of Lord Of The World would help people understand his fears for a secular society, including the promotion of contraception and gay marriage, a phenomenon he had described as ā€œideological colonisationā€ in Manila.First published in 1907 as a response to the utopian, atheistic vision of British author H.G.Wells, Lord Of The World was written by Robert Hugh Benson, an Etonian author who also specialised in ghost stories. Set in the 21st century, Lord Of The World sees socialists, humanists and Freemasons taking over a society where euthanasia is obligatory for the ill, Esperanto is the common language, and everyone travels by ā€˜volorā€™, a form of Zeppelin. Religion has been suppressed. The antichrist returns, becoming the president of the world before going to war with the Catholic Church, precipitating the end of the world.Benson, formerly an Anglican priest, wrote his dark vision of the future, often cited as one of the first modern dystopias, after converting to Catholicism in 1904 and becoming a Catholic priest. The youngest son of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Benson hailed from literary stock. One brother, Edward Frederic Benson, wrote the Mapp and Lucia comic novels, while another, Arthur Christopher Benson, wrote the words for Land of Hope and Glory, and also Hugh ā€“ Memoirs of a Brother, the biography that comes free with this profusely illustrated www.ApostropeBooks.com edition.

  • Lord of the World

    Robert Hugh Benson

Hardcover (Neumann Press, Jan. 1, 1999)
A prophetic novel on the Antichrist! This novel, written in 1906, takes place around the year 2000. Msgr. Benson's prophetic insight is exciting and accurate and gives the reader a glimpse into the immediate future and the growth of Antichrist. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen says "The three great apocalyptic pieces of literature dealing with the advent of the satanic are Father Hugh Benson's Lord of the World, Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamozov, and Soloviev's Three Conversations on War." The author was a Catholic priest, passionately eager to spread Roman Catholicism and fiercely antagonistic to alien creeds, even when tenderly devoted to many who might hold them . . ." - C.C. Martindale, S.J. 346 pages, smyth-sewn signatures, cream paper, gold embossed, hardcover.
  • Lord of the World

    Robert Hugh Benson

Hardcover (Baronius Press, Nov. 1, 2015)
Recommended by Pope Francis as a must-read book on several occasions, and described by Fulton Sheen as one of the three greatest depictions of the advent of the demonic in world literature, Lord of the World is science fiction with a difference. It foresees the West succumbing to a form of international socialism that crushes individuality. The forces of secular materialism, relativism and state control are everywhere triumphant. Protestantism is no more, and Catholicism which had seen a period of renewal in the first half of the twentieth century has been devastated by the development of new psychologies and the exodus of intellectuals in the wake of an Ecumenical Council. Euthanasia has become an instrument of the state, Esperanto the universal second language. Nevertheless, although organised religion has largely collapsed in the face of institutional secularism, a vague, humanistic religiosity militantly hostile to the exclusive and supernatural claims of the Church is present everywhere. Finally, the East, which has amalgamated into a single, pantheistic bloc, poses a military threat. With the world adrift from all spiritual moorings and seemingly doomed to enter into a civil war between East and West a sinister figure appears from nowhere to achieve world domination. Julian Felsenberg diplomat, scholar, guru, the Antichrist...
