Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 9, 2010)
No two young men could be closer than Rupert and Edgar Clinton. Two brothers living carefree at school, until a stranger approaches and reveals a secret past. Shocked, Edgar runs away and joins the British Army. He then embarks with his unit to Egypt, on the Nile Expedition, to relieve British forces under siege at Khartoum. These forces, led by Charles Gordon, are being attacked by the forces of a Muslim Mahdi (prophetic leader). Will Edgar and his unit reach Khartoum in time? Will Edgar survive the battle? Will Rupert ever see his brother again? These questions, and more, are answered in Dash to Khartoum: The Nile Expedition by G.A. Henty. Set in late 19th century Africa, this book includes more than one hundred geographical, historical, and explanatory footnotes to aid the modern reader.
  • The Dash for Khartoum: A Tale of the Nile Expedition

    G. A. Henty

Paperback (Forgotten Books, July 1, 2012)
The story of the Nile Expedition is so recent that no word of introduction is necessary to the historical portion of the tale. The moral, such as it is, of the story of the two lads brought up as brothers, is Never act in haste, for repent ance is sure to follow. In this case great anxiety and unhappiness were caused through a lad acting as he believed for the best, but without consulting those who had every right to a voice in the matter. That all came right in the end in no way affects this excellent rule, for all might have gone wrong. We are often misled by a generous impulse, more often perhaps than by an evil one, but the consequences may be just as serious in the one case as the other. When in trouble you should always go freely to your best friends and natural advisers, and lay the case fully before them. It may be that, if the trouble has arisen from your own fault, you will have to bear their temporary displeasure, but this is a small thing in comparison with the permanent injury that may arise from acting on your own impulse.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. It may bethat, if the trouble has arisen from your own fault, you will have tobear their temporary displeasure, but this is a small thing incomparison with the permanent injury that may arise from acting on yourown impulse. In most cases, cowardice lies at the bottom of concealment, and cowardice is of all vices the most contemptible; while the fear ofthe displeasure of a parent has ruined many a boy's life. Therefore, when you are in serious trouble always go to your best friend, yourfather, and lay the case frankly and honestly before him; for you maybe sure that present displeasure and even punishment are but smallthings in comparison with the trouble that may arise from trying to getout of the difficulty in other ways.G.
