  • Anything Once

    Isabel Ostrander (1883 - 1924)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, March 15, 2016)
Isabel Ostrander (1883 - 1924) was a prolific writer of mystery fiction and one of the first authors who adopted the theme of a blind detective in their novels. Although Anything Once is not consistent with most of the literary themes explored throughout Ostrander's books, it is a remarkably readable romance that you will fall in love with as you read.New Yorker Jim Abbott gets more than he bargained for when he makes a bet with his friends and decides to set out on a journey designed to prove that the inhabitants of Upper New York State are kind and generous. After a rough start and a brief but frightening encounter with a bull, Abbott meets Lou, a runaway teenage girl who seeks to start a new life, as far away as possible from the abusive family she was assigned to after staying at an orphanage. As both are going the same way, this unlikely couple goes through a series of extraordinary and delightful adventures that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Where will their journey together truly end? You will have to read through this well-written and quite beautiful tale of friendship, love and adventure, in order to find out.Ostrander's style surprises through its uniqueness and methodical, yet lighthearted qualities found in Anything Once. This is characteristic to Ostrander herself, who enjoyed surprising her readers, even using male pseudonyms such as David Fox and Douglas Grant when signing her stories. However, regardless of how much the story itself will surprise even fans of Ostrander's mystery novels, you will undoubtedly be able to see the innocent beauty of this love story and the characteristic life lessons that come with it. While Ostrander's goal is not to pass morals, modern day readers would definitely have much to gain and learn from reading Anything Once, an equally entertaining and instructive novel.

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Oct. 11, 2017)
Excerpt from Anything OnceAt length there came a dry rustling in the tall standing wheat in the field on the opposite side of the road, and a head and shoulders appeared above the topmost fence-rail. It was a small head covered with tow-colored hair, which had been slicked back and braided so tightly that the short, meager cue curled outward and up in a crescent, as though it were wired, and the shoulders beneath the coarse blue-and-white striped cotton gown were thin and peaked.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
