I originally wrote this story in 2007 after living for nearly a decade in the heavily crime ridden and gang infested MacArthur Park neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. Two girls who had spent their lives in the pristine suburbs of the midwest and southwest, my 67 year old mother and I made a comfortable and idyllic home in this most unlikely community. I wrote this piece to originally to capture this moment in time. It was first published, and was one of the most often viewed and commented on stories, on a blog that I no longer write. I hope you enjoy this short piece and I would be very grateful if, after reading it, you would be kind enough to leave a fair and honest review.
