It’s a game-changer that could either bring the team back after being down by a lot or seal the game away as a dagger shot. It’s the kind of shot you need to spend hours of work on and several days of repetition to master, or at least hit at a good clip. In the history of the NBA, a lot of games have been sealed or put away early because of the three-point shot. And in league history, nobody has ever hit more of those shots than the sniper they call Ray Allen. With almost 3,000 career three-pointers made, Ray Allen is the finest outside marksman the league has ever seen from a historical standpoint. He was one of the few players that lived from the three-point arc as his mindset was always to shoot the ball from the outside as much as he could. But Allen did not do so just because he wanted to. Making a lot of three-pointers is not as simple as putting up a lot of attempts from that spot on the floor. But Ray-Ray did so because that was the skill he mastered from a young age. He’s put hours of work and repetition to learn that shot, and he’s mastered it at several spots on the floor to be effective from well all over outside or inside the perimeter.Tags: Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Allen Iverson, Rajon Rondo, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Seattle Supersonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Reggie Miller, Stephen Curry

Not only does the extra point do a lot to change the course of an entire NBA game, but it is also the most efficient shot. The close-range layups and dunks are still the easiest shots in the NBA, but the three-point shot makes all the difference when it comes to increasing the offensive efficiency of any team or player. Today, almost all of the teams one sees in the NBA rely heavily on the three-pointer. Players have also been shooting the three-pointer more than ever. However, the NBA was not always reliant on the three-point shot. The shot was first introduced in the professional ranks back in the inaugural 1967-68 season of the American Basketball Association (before it was merged with the NBA). The late ABA commissioner George Mikan, arguably the NBA's first superstar, said that they introduced the three-point shot so that smaller players will have a competitive advantage against bigger players. However, though there are still super teams in today's era, the style has become more reliant on overall team play instead of just putting the ball in the hands of the team's three All-Stars. We saw the Golden State Warriors playing that way since they won the NBA title in 2015. Though they had many stars on their team, they relied more on spacing and ball movement to win games. This led to the current pace-and-space era where teams rely more on increasing the tempo of the game while spacing the floor with four or more shooters. While the three-pointer was a way for the ABA to compete with the NBA in terms of excitement, fans were not used to seeing players bombing away from 25 feet. Mikan said that it was their version of a "home run" and could get fans off their feet but was never a primary weapon for any team back then. It eventually disappeared when the NBA and the ABA completed their merger in the 70s.Tags: JJ Redick biography, JJ Redick book, books for basketball fans, orlando magic, manu ginobili
