  • To The Top!: Adventures of a Young Boy

    Warren Carlson

    eBook
To The Top! chronicles the lives of twelve-year-old Jack Iverson and his friends growing up in the small mountain town of Mt. Shasta, California. Unlike many books for middle readers, Jack's parents and his neighbors, ranging from the slightly crazy Mrs. Monahan to the famous historian and mountain climber, Doctor Ballard, are very much part of the story. Jack helps his dad build a swimming pool in the backyard and, in the woods near his house, he and his friends have adventures both imagined and real. They have a shack where they talk about their dreams, a platform in a high tree that is very scary on windy days and they find lumber at an abandoned saw mill that they use to build a sailboat.Jack also "falls in love" with a spirited girl named Alison, learns to ski the expert runs, works hard to succeed at baseball and rescues his friend Davie from a flash flood! What Jack discovers about himself through his adventures gives him the confidence that he will succeed in life.At the end of the summer Jack and his mother climb Mt. Shasta together. At the summit, Jack realizes that his whole life is there before him and that he will have his own stories to tell.
