    André Laurie, Laura E. Kendall

About the Book The Jin state was formed in southern Korea in the 3rd century BC. During the Goryeo period, laws were codified, a civil service system was introduced, and Buddhist influenced culture flourished, but Mongol invasions in the 13th century brought Goryeo under its influence. In 1392, General Yi Seong-gye established the Joseon dynasty, which lasted to 1910. By the mid 19th century Joseon Korea was forced to sign unequal treaties with foreign powers. In 1905, the Korean Empire signed a protectorate treaty with Japan, which in 1910 annexed it. After WW2 the Allies divided the country, and in 1948, when the powers failed to agree on the formation of a single government, the peninsula was divided at the 38th Parallel. The new premier of Soviet/China-backed North Korea, Kim il-Sung, launched the Korean War in 1950. This division has continued to the present day. Also in this Book Titles from Russian drama reflect the movement towards realism, which began sooner than anywhere else. The Moscow Art Theatre, 1898, led reform of a Russian theater hitherto dominated by melodrama, to one where high-quality drama was made available to the public. That year the theater opened Anton Chekhov's The Seagull. In the early part of the 20th century, Russia experienced a cultural Silver Age, with a significant number of theaters offering realistic or naturalistic theater. After the Russian Revolution, many theater artists left Russia for other countries. And in this Book Russian poetry experienced a Golden Age in the first half of the 19th century, and is often called the Age of Pushkin, after its most significant poet. Mikhail Lermontov and Fyodor Tyutchev were considered the most important Romantic poets after Pushkin, while Vasily Zhukovsky and Konstantin Batyushkov are considered his finest precursors. The Ukrainian language poetry of Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) had a profound effect on the re-birth of the language and national consciousness, as the Ukrainian language had suffered persecution under the Russian Empire. Other outstanding Ukkrainian poets included Ivan Franko (1856-1916), who wrote in western Ukraine under Austria-Hungary, and Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913).About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. Not illustrated.1893 Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII. AN EVENING AT THE PREFECT'S.--CAPTAIN GEORGE. THE "Voce Romana" seemed to take warning, for after the publication of Mr. Randal's letter, the serpent ceased to hiss; but this little passage at arms, and above all, the facts that had caused it, formed the chief topic of conversation for several days. They were discussing the affair one evening over their ices, at the house of the prefect, the Hon. Signor Vitellio Consalvi; and as Dr. Julius Bollmann, recently presented by the German ambassador, was among the invited guests assembled in the drawing-room, there is every reason to suppose that the subject had not come up entirely by chance. "There was considerable truth in that article in the 'Voce Romana,'" remarked M. Bollmann, with the thoroughly impartial air of a philosopher who has not the slightest personal interest in the matter,--" there was considerable truth in that article. It was written, too, with great moderation, and the sentiments and style would indicate that the writer was the possessor of no little talent. It is characterized, too, by a spirit of patriotism which is convincing proof of the writer's sincerity. His reasoning is perfectly logical; and if it is really true that a foreign professor occupies a chair in one of your most prominent institutions of learning, the matter should certainly be investigated." "It is true," exclaimed young Amilcare Consalvi, who would have been much better occupied at that hour in bed, or in studying his lessons for the next day. "The foreigner's name is M. Randal. He is a Frenchman, and a professor in the lyceum I attend." "A Frenchman!" said Dr. Bollmann, bringing his gold spectacles to bear upon the young man. "A Frenchman! You have a French professor!" he continued in a tone of sorrowful ast...

  • Schoolboy Days in Japan

    André Laurie

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 29, 2017)
Excerpt from Schoolboy Days in JapanThe region was wild and almost uninhabited, it being far removed from the railroads, which have increased with marvellous rapidity of late years in other parts Of the kingdom; but Alice and Gerard, accustomed from their earliest childhood to accompany their father on his long tramps, and even on his mountaineering expeditions, found the ascent neither difficult nor arduous. Such was not the case, however, with the young Japanese, who seemed to have engaged in the undertaking without duly considering the consequences. He appeared, too, quite as timid as he was awkward, for he paused at the slightest Obstacle. Before beginning the ascent, M. Duplay had taken the precaution to fasten securely around his own body a long, strong rope, which was attached to the belts of the three children, and of his valet, Omar, and, lastly, to that of the native guide who preceded them. But this precaution, though of considerable service to the more experienced tourists, proved a positive source of danger to a laggard like Shakespeare, inasmuch as the rope was likely to throw him down at any moment by reason of his hesitating movements and sudden pauses.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Schoolboy Days in Russia

    Andre Laurie

Paperback (Forgotten Books, April 21, 2017)
Excerpt from Schoolboy Days in RussiaI think I know the real culprit. It is one of my col lege mates. A word from me would, perhaps, suffice to immure him in this gloomy prison, to which I was brought two days ago, - to make him the inmate of this damp cell infested with rats and vermin: I can hear the rats running about now, under the dirty straw that serves as my couch. He would receive from the hand of the jailer the loaf of black bread and jug of water which constitute my rations for each day; he would find his fingers and feet become ing more and more benumbed by the cold wind that blows through the bars of my window; he would wear these heavy chains; he would be the Object of general distrust and suspicion. But how can I accuse another person without proofs. Especially when that other person is a schoolmate, and I have only some rather vague charges to make against him, charges based probably to a great extent upon the antipathy and distrust with which he inspired me from the beginning of our acquaintance?About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
