  • A Novel

    Julian Hawthorne

Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 4, 2015)
Excerpt from A NovelOne reason doubtless lay in the fact that, by craning forward over his knees, he could see down the passage-way, through the porch, and across the grass-plot which intervened between the house and the fence, to the road, thus commanding all approaches from that direction, while his outlook on either side, and in front, remained as good as from any other position whatsoever. To be sure, the result would have been more easily accomplished had the chair been moved two feet farther forward, but that would have made the professor too much a public spectacle, and, although by no means backward in appearing, at the fitting time, before his fellow-men, he enjoyed and required a certain amount of privacy. Moreover, it was not toward the road that Professor Valeyon's eyes were most often turned. They generally wandered southward, over the ample garden, and across the long, winding valley, to the range of rough-backed hills, which abruptly invaded the farther horizon. It was a sufficiently varied and vigorous prospect, and one which years had endeared to the old gentleman, as if it were the features of a friend. Especially was he fond of looking at a certain open space, near the summit of a high, wooded hill, directly opposite. It was like an oasis among a desert of trees. Had it become overgrown, or had the surrounding timber been cut away, the professor would have taken it much to heart. A voluntary superstition of this kind is not uncommon in elderly gentlemen of more than ordinary intellectual power. It is a sort of half-playful revenge they wreak upon themselves for being so wise.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Quix: A Novel

    A. Hugh Fisher

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, May 9, 2016)
About the Book In historical fiction the plot is set in the past, and pays attention to the manners, social conditions and other details of the period portrayed. Some authors choose to include famous historical figures in their fictional plots, so that audiences can imagine how those individuals might have responded to the plots and environments established by the author. The Western literary component of this genre is founded in the early 19th century works of such authors as Sir Walter Scott, Honoré de Balzac, James Fenimore Cooper, and Leo Tolstoy. Also in this Book The romance novel, which is sometimes termed the romantic novel, places its primary focus on the development of a romantic relationship and love between two people. The sub-genres of the romance novel include: fantasy, historical romance, paranormal fiction, and science fiction. Romance novels existed in ancient Greece, and were also to be found in the literary fiction of the 18th and 19th centuries in the works of such authors as Samuel Richardson and Jane Austen. Also in this Book Titles covering drama and theater in the United States describe that part of the European theatrical tradition, dating back to ancient Greek theater, that is heavily influenced by British theatre. US drama has been heavily focussed on New York City at Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway. Outside of New York, larger cities have professional regional or resident theater companies that produce their own seasons. some works aspiring to eventually play in New York. US theater also has an active community theater culture, relying on local volunteers. Mr Douglas's studio, Mimps? Quix asked during dinner. My dear child, it's quite impossible you know we've only two more days in England and can't possibly get everything in as it is. Couldn't we go to - morrow morning? I know it's not quite the thing to take him by surprise, especially in the morning, but you saw how eager he was to meet us again, and we could just manage it after the stores. Impossible, Quix, in every way. You know we can't go out early, and after the stores Mr Eve is going to let us choose a brooch for your birthday from the electros his man makes at the museum. I have set my heart on giving you one like my dolphins to wear with the amethysts, and there are other things besides. It's most vexing that I've lost my maid, Henry, she added, turning to Mr Eve, one of the Castles' oldest friends, for whom some evening was always set aside whenever they returned to England. She gave notice at the last moment can't face returning to Borneo and the agency is sending a batch of girls here to - morrow morning for me to choose from. Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 10, 2018)
Excerpt from Quix a NovelThe Castles were now in Sloane Street in the house of Sir Richard's brother Aylmer. Aylmer himself was away in Switzerland, and the loan of his house was no more than a slight return for their kindness in giving him the run of Merestones, their place in Kent, during their long absences from England. Sir Richard Castle had an old-fashioned objection to its being occupied by anyone outside the family, and had persistently refused the most tempting offers from rich Americans to rent his ancestral home.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Quix : a novel

    Alfred Hugh Fisher

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
