Providing anesthesia to a patient is the single most critical field of medical practice. It involves drugging a patient to the edge of life and death to facilitate surgery, and then bring them back. Physicians may deliver a new child into the world, and an hour later have an aged old patient die from pneumonia. Physicians witness patients on the edge of life and death. That horrific fact becomes a daily routine, but often one hesitates to think and it all becomes an overwhelming thought. Few can understand what the doctor feels and how they survive living on the edge with other people. Being on the edge can also be exhilarating. Read a doctor's true life experiences of living on the edge, in a short essay.

Fiction. Women's Studies. Young Adult. ON THE EDGE tells the story of Emerald Lake Visser, an unhappy fourteen-year-old who came to live on her aunt and uncle's farm when she was orphaned at age five. A misfit in her community and at school, her only real friend is an elderly woman, Jess, who teaches her to sail. Emma's a natural sailor, as if she's been on a sailboat her whole life. When Jess dies, it's revealed that she was Emma's grandmother. After receiving a letter that her mother may be living in the Bahamas, Emma runs away on her grandmother's boat, the Edge, to find her. Disguising herself as a boy, Emma sails the Edge through the Erie Canal, down the Hudson River, out onto the Atlantic Ocean and through the ICW to Miami, where she crosses the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. Navigational mistakes, near misses with the coast guard, a robbery, and storms put Emma in danger time and again. To add to her stress, by the time she reaches New York City she suspects she's being followed. She notices small black pebbles appearing on her boat, along with dirty footprints in her cockpit. When a handwritten note is tucked into her porthole, she becomes very frightened. She has no passport and is underage. If she's caught, she'll be sent back to the farm. But Emma is determined to find her mother.

Sent to live with other troubled boys at the Home of Lesser Brethren, an isolated farm perched in the craggy lava fields along the unforgiving Icelandic coast, Henry finds a precarious contentment among the cows. But it is the people, including the manic preacher who runs the home, who fuel Henry’s frustration and sometimes rage as he yearns for a life and a home. Richard Hammond

Audio CD (Orion (an Imprint of The Orion Publishing Group Ltd ), Oct. 19, 2007)
He describes his childhood and adolescence and the emergence of the adrenalin junkie, the first ridiculous stunts on his tricycle, and an increasing and near obsessive attraction to speed and the smell of petrol. He finds an attractive girl, Mindy, who shares his interests and helps him organise his high-speed life. For such a lively and intelligent communicator TV beckons and he becomes one of the daredevil trio, with Jeremy Clarkson and James May, who make such an enormous world-wide success of the revamped BBC TV programme Top Gear. He describes the personalities, the camaraderie and the stunts with which they entertain their weekly audiences until the day of his 300 mph crash that took Top Gear off the air and plunged a nation into mourning. The day of the crash, his rescue and the flight to hospital in a coma are described and then Mindy recounts the anxious waiting until he finally emerges from his coma - to immediately pull out all his life support equipment - and Richard then pieces together the stages of recovery as his shattered mind slowly reforms. We learn exactly what happened to him and the milestones in his slow recovery to full health. The final chapter recounts the return to Top Gear and the screening of the events of that fateful day.
