Lucile Tucker’s slim, tapered fingers trembled slightly as she rested them against a steel-framed bookcase. She had paused to steady her shaken nerves, to collect her wits, to determine what her next move should be. “Who can it be?” her madly thumping heart kept asking her. And, indeed, who, besides herself, could be in the book stacks at this hour of the night?

The Secret Mark CHAPTER I A MYSTERIOUS VISITOR Lucile Tucker's slim, tapered fingers trembled slightly as she rested them against a steel-framed bookcase. She had paused to steady her shaken nerves, to collect her wits, to determine what her next move should be. "Who can it be?" her madly thumping heart kept asking her. And, indeed, who, besides herself, could be in the book stacks at this hour of the night? About her, ranging tier on tier, towering from floor to ceiling, were books, thousands on thousands of books. The two floors above were full of books. The two below were the same. This place was a perfect maze of books. It was one of the sections of a great library, the library of one of the finest universities of the United States. In all this vast "city of books" she had thought herself quite alone. It was a ghostly hour. Midnight. In the towers the great clock had slowly struck. Besides the striking of the clock there had been but a single sound: the click of an electric light snapped on. There had instantly gleamed at her feet a single ray of light. That light had traveled beneath many tiers of books to reach her. She thought it must be four but was not quite sure.

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 22, 2018)
Excerpt from Mark Marksen's Secret a StoryAnd when the fact became known, by degrees, to just a few persons, even then an air Of mystery still hovered round the place, causing it to be almost as much shunned as formerly. For the few who, pass ing by the forest house, discovered it to be newly tenanted brought home strange tales of it and of those who dwelt there; for peasant eyes and minds taking note of unaccustomed sights and sounds, and failing to comprehend, attributed to them a mysterious origin born chiefly of their own superstitious fancies.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Secret Mark is an excellent story from the pen of Roy J. Snell, one of the most successful and most prolific authors of mysteries for young and girls in the history of 20th century American literature. The protagonist of the story, the amateur detective and young genius who follows leads and assembles information to complete a story with gaps like only the best adult detectives can is Lucile Tucker, a student of Chicago University and part-time university librarian. This time she investigates a theft – one evening she follows a girl in the library and sees the girl stealing a valuable book form one of the special collections in the library. The child then mysteriously disappears, but Lucile is already intrigued and decides to find out who the child is and why she stole the book. While on the case, she is helped by her friend and roommate, a girl called Florence and together they follow clues and leads that take them to a crumbling old building in the outskirts of Chicago. They also come across some strange old books that have an even stranger mark on the inside of their cover. It all seems to become more and more complicated, but the two girls eventually find an explanation to all the strange events and they solve the mystery, too.The Secret Mark is the third story in the author’s Mystery Stories for Girls series. Many of the author’s other stories feature the same young amateur detective, but he has other protagonists as well. He wrote almost 80 stories during his long literary career – 76, to be precise -, including not only mystery stories for adults and for young readers, but eight war novels dedicated to young boys, numerous travelogues, stories about animals, network serials, dozens of adventure stories and academic essays as well.
