Gail gets a mysterious gift from her great aunt for her eighteenth birthday —- a bracelet with faces painted on it that her mother identifies as long ago ancestors who lived on the Oregon Coast. Gail thinks it is so ugly and disturbing (she has nightmares about it) that she tries to throw it away. But the garbage man returns it to her. Suddenly her father gets a transfer to a lighthouse on the same part of the Oregon Coast. But when they try to get to the small town of Mystic Cliffs all the locals balk. One night half the town died in a huge storm at sea. They were all fishermen, and their boats sank. Since then the town has been deserted. This place of ill omen seems to be drawing Gail on, and there is nothing she can do about it. It has caught her in its clutches.
