Annie Oakley was a real woman who became a legend through her extraordinary life and skills. She was crack shot with a rifle and became a star attraction of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Phoebe Anne Moses, called Annie Oakley, got her start with a rifle in Darke County, Ohio, at the age of 10. She helped provide food for her family by hunting and then began a business selling her extra game to shops in Cincinnati. It was there in 1880 that she entered a shooting contest against Frank Butler, a professional sharpshooter. Frank became her husband and later her manager, helping Annie to win stardom in a show called Buffalo Bill's Wild West.

Annie was seven years old when her mother sent her away to work. They were just too poor to keep her at home. But this little girl had a very special talent. She could shoot better than anyone. She could even shoot the cork off a bottle. By fourteen she was keeping her family alive. But who could have guessed that Annie would become internationally famous, travel the world with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, make friends with Chief Sitting Bull, even perform before Queen Victoria herself! For no one gun could outshoot Annie Oakley and her gun.
