Fashionable women spent hours each day changing between outfits suitable for every occasion or indeed for different times of the day and most styles were marvelously impracticable and difficult to move in. There was a growing campaign throughout the period for more practical "rational dress" but it was the end of the century before it gained wide acceptance. For men the change in style from showy extravagance to "general moderation" had come rather earlier.
