Franklin the Turtle and his animal friends like to play detectives. They solve mysteries by searching for clues, so they call themselves the Super Cluepers. One day, when Franklin's younger sister, Harriet, can't find her stuffed animal Lilly Kitty anywhere, Franklin says, ?This sounds like a job for the Super Cluepers!? He and his friends immediately transform into their super detective selves. Bear becomes Mega Bear, stronger than anybody; Beaver turns into Book Whiz, the smartest of the smarts; and Fox changes into Kid Gizmo, the greatest gadget guy in the world. Luckily, each one of the Super Cluepers has a special and different skill, so they make an awesome team when they all work together. And that's just what it will take to solve this tough case! Based on the 3D-animated television series Franklin and Friends, the popular Franklin and Friends book series is known for relatable stories that offer useful advice for young children on navigating their social lives. In this story, the friends model the diverse ways every child can be a superhero with his or her own unique superpower, helping to promote self-esteem. This book would work beautifully for character education lessons on perseverance, cooperation and teamwork. With the group's meticulous process of looking for clues and deciphering what they mean, it also offers a terrific example of how much fun it can be to figure things out. • Franklin and the Wonder

    Henry Endrulat

Paperback (Kids Can Press, Sept. 1, 2012)
While searching for ?a wonder of nature? to share with their class for a special school project, Franklin and Rabbit are excited to find a chrysalis hanging from the branch of a bush. When they learn that the chrysalis is the home of a caterpillar that's soon going to turn into a butterfly, they know they've found the perfect wonder! There's only one problem --- Rabbit says he can't talk about their discovery in front of the whole class. He's afraid that everyone will laugh at him. ?Sometimes when I'm scared, practicing what scares me helps,? Franklin suggests. And he devises a creative, not scary way for Rabbit to practice ahead of time so that he'll be prepared. But will practicing be enough to help Rabbit get over his fear? As with many of the books in this series based on the 3D-animated television show Franklin and Friends, this book provides a model for dealing with a real problem --- the fear of public speaking --- faced by small children. This book offers just the right starting point for classroom discussions about all kinds of fears, or for a character education lesson on empathy or caring. It's also a perfect introduction to a similar science project in which children can head outdoors and discover their own wonder of nature to share.

  • Franklin in the Stars

    Harry Endrulat

Paperback (Kids Can Press, March 1, 2013)
Franklin the Turtle and his sister, Harriet, are thrilled when Aunt T shows up to babysit with a telescope. They can't wait to do some stargazing! Unfortunately, the sky is too cloudy, and Franklin is disappointed to hear they won't be able to use the telescope after all. Luckily, Aunt T has a great idea for a new plan. Sure, they aren't able to look at the real night sky, but with some ingenuity and plenty of imagination, they can create their own version of outer space --- inside! Based on the 3D-animated TV series Franklin and Friends, this tie-in picture book highlights a very common experience for young children --- being disappointed when highly anticipated plans don't work out. Here, children are reminded that it's always possible to find another alternative, and a lot of fun, if you just know where to look and keep an open mind. This entertaining, brightly colored book with its familiar characters would be a big success as a read-aloud in a preschool or kindergarten classroom. It offers an excellent starting point for a lesson about being creative in any number of ways --- painting and drawing, making up new games to play or even copying the idea of crafting a unique solar system as it's done in the book. As with all Franklin books, this one also ties in beautifully with character education lessons, this time on adaptability, teamwork, optimism or patience.

But Snail doesn't want to play spaceship, he wants to play his harmonica. ?You can do that later,? Franklin answers him, and so Snail agrees to join his friends. But even after blasting off into space, dodging meteors and landing on Planet Glorp, Snail isn't having any fun in the spaceship. He would still rather play his harmonica.
